is there a list of what it's supposed to change anywhere?

I just finished the update and everything went as planned.

All personal settings, software and registrations wer restored with one exception...

I had to re-install VoiceDial. Once re-installed my registration key was remembered.

What was wrong with the old version that required a firmware update? Have they added features or disabled features? What's new?

Essentially VZW says the following has changed although people are reporting that they are finding other small changes, e.g. the "add number to contacts" popup no longer appearing.

    - Latest version of Wireless Sync email application software
    - Internal settings modification to allow correct access to Verizon Wireless roaming partner networks 111

I'm not sure I care to upgrade until I'm ready since I finally got my phone to work very well right now.

Well this has been a nightmare for me. First it would not load the ROM update. saying that I don't have enough room on in the treo. I checked and have 21mb left.

So after a few soft resets, it finally started the update.

Update went fine...while trying to restore everything through hotsync I got the endless loop.

So I just did another hard reset, confirmed that the ROM update took. It did.

Now I am trying the hotsync restore again, if this does not work, I will use the backupmon stuff from this morning.

    What a pain.

Well I had to do another hard reset and use Backupman to restore everything...what a pain in the ARSE....

I will be thinking twice about this again in the future.

Is it possible to do the ROM update using just Missing Sync? I don't have Palm Desktop installed and I don't want to get the ROM install program confused!

That said, I'm going to wait until people have had time to discover all the things Verizon has taken away from us with this update before I decide to install it.

well... in reference to my prev post ( http://discussion.treocentral.com/sh...8&postcount=19 ), I ended up taking in my precious to the VZW store today, & they had me talk to the Data Svcs People. They had me do yet another Hard Reset, to no avail. Then they confirmed that I indeed fried my baby!!!

I will now be Treo-less till around Friday!!! BOOHOO...
    I'm not weird... I'm gifted!!!

I updated mine last night. It went fairly smooth. I have to say that after the update, either my battery indicator has broken or my battery life has much improved. I have used my phone all morning just like any other morning. Instead of my typical 75-80% remaining at lunch, I have 97% remaining?! I have no clue what's different. It still checks my mail every 30, i still have my BT headset running... who knows. Pretty cool though!

I have been a long time reader of this forum but never posted before. However, I feel that I need to let people know what mistake I made before they install their update 1.03.
Anyhow, I read about the update here and was eager to update right away for my two month old Treo 650. By the way, my treo is working perfectly before with 3rd party programs like zlauncher, notepad, document to go, epocrates, KDIC, CJKOS, etc. I went to Palmone site and followed their instructions. After the first backup and then hard reset, I followed their guide and do another hotsync with a TempDelete username. My computer hotsync and my treo hotsync both were stuck at syncing "media". I let it run for over an hour but still in the same place. I decided to cancel the hotsync by pressing the cancel button but it change into "this might take 1 minute to cancel" on my computer and "cancelling" on my treo. It stays like that for another hour. I know that it must be in a endless cycle or frozen. I then decided to take the risk of frying my treo and did Ctrl + Alt + Delete on my computer to end the Hotsync. The treo remains in hotsync cancelling mode. I waited another 30 minutes and decided to take the chance and just pulled the sync cable. I was lucky, my treo didn't fry, just softreset. I figured that I was stupid enough to leave my SD card in while doing all this and there is a movie in it. My word for the ones that hasn't update yet, remove your SD card before trying the procedure. After I remove my SD card and redo the update, all went smoothly.
After the update, I find that all my softwares were reinstalled except the above mentioned ones like notepad and voicedialer (by the way, if you update the voicedialer and did not register, the new version is more troublesome to start, so stay with the older version if you have a copy).
After the update, I find improvement in the speed of my Hotsync. I also find that bluetooth pairing with my BMW B60 (previously with known problems pairing with Treo 650) went much smoother. I am yet to try out the sound quality.

Sorry for the long message but I hope that helps some.

I downloaded and installed the VZW 1.03 update this afternoon. No problems with installation. The one thing that I have noticed in the 2+ hours running the new firmware is that my single strength seems to be improved.

The building that my office is in has very poor cell phone reception. With my former phone (Motorola V710) I was able to get 2 bars and that was better than many colleagues who get 0-1 bars with their various phones. When I got my 650 in June, my biggest disapointment was that I now appeared to be in the 0-1 bar club, as well. My cell calls in the office were often garbled or dropped.

This afternoon with 1.03, I am holding steady at 2 bars. I'll have to give it a few days before conclusively saying that things have improved, but it looks promising!

GREAT point addictedtotreo about the SD card. I left mine in when I synced it and it took a long long time before it did its thing.

remove the card BEFORE doing this.

As far as reception goes, it seems the same, but I now have the triangle on the phone screen. I don't remember what it means (and will have to look it up), but I don't think it was there before the update.

My update: I remembered that the triangle means I'm roaming. I also realized the Verizon Wireless tag was gone. Since this ROM update was to allow the phone to hanlde roaming better (according to VZW) this struck me as really strange since I've never used roaming from my home before. I did the *228 #2 and updated my prl again (I programmmed the phone after the ROM update) and the triangle disappeared and the Verizon tag came back.
The update is supposed to improve roaming by allowing it to better use towers outside of Verizon. As far as the verizon lable on the upper left, the instructions tell you to dial *228 and use option 1 to re-program your phone. Did as it says and verizon is up there again with the triangle.

I just did the update, and it looks like everything is fine. FYI, there is one confusing part, when you do your Hotsync after the ROM updater runs on the palm: the written instructions on the website tell you to Hotsync with your original user name, and the updater program on the PC tells you to use TempDelete. Use your original name, to restore your original data. The installer will get confused, but its job is already done at that point.

I updated mine this evening and so far so good. Everything transfered and only had to install a file for one ap for it to work. I had my SD card in with some mp3s and didn't notice any problems. If I'd have thought about it I think it would've been smart to remove it. As for more bars, I just did the *18 dial that was discussed yesterday, and it still added a bar after doing it.

I really want to do the update if it has any chance to improve signal (I'm in a 0-1 bar apartment for the next month), but I'm afraid some horrible bug or incompatibility will be discovered in the next few days. Is there any way to go back to the original ROM if this one does something unpleasant? I'm guessing there's not, unless Shadowmite comes up with something later. Anybody know?
