No, use Palm Internals to view what's in the list... List what's in HEDE, it's the big one that slows things down for this. List out the apps listed there, don't paste the whole output as that's useless.

I've found the 680 has more stuff in the pipe compared to the 650, this is the reason the 700 and 680 are reported to be slower than the 650 IMO. Perhaps more dbcache checking stuff in there as I recall.

Big stuff was KeyCaps (I think I'm using an older version) and - surprisingly - ZLauncher. To be fair on ZL, it's a beta version.

The funny thing it's only when the "Default Launcher" box is checked.

    What I had before: ~15000 & 150 sec
Without ZLauncher enabled at all: ~7700 & 77 sec
Without ZLauncher or KeyCaps: ~250 & 3 sec
    If I re-enable Zlauncher BUT don't check the "Default" box: ~250 & 3 sec
Re-enable "Default" - right back up to ~7800 and 78 sec

Incidentally, newest versions of 2Day, FontSmoother had no impact.

So, the KeyCaps and "Default" ZLauncher are the big ones. Of course, they're my 2 favorite programs that I have trouble imagining doing without

Seems ZLauncher hasn't been much of a problem in the past, so hopefully the non-beta version will take care of this.

The app that pulls my numbers down is FieldPlus. Anyone know of something similar with a better design?

The link a post above yours (#563) has a patched version of it that you can try. I just installed the latest beta versions of the patched KeyCaps600 and FieldPlus and my 680 is quite a bit quicker now!

Funny. I use the modified version of Keycaps, but missed the fact that Fieldplus was also modified by the same developer. I loaded the new Fieldplus and I get 180 tics and 2 secs.

    thanks!

I use TreoKeyHack with YAHM. It has less impact on tics.

do people agree with this... does treokeyhack keep your treo running quicker than using the updated keycaps and fieldplus?

Treokeyhack seems to have both functionalities together already, keycaps and fieldplus.

KeyCaps, by itself does not appear to slow down the Treo (don't know about FieldPlus). The only problem with TreoKeyHack is, it requires the unfortunately named YAHM.

is YAHM bad.. i have it running treokeyhack and fonthackV

I have no clue... but I've had resets with YAHM installed. Of-course, in itself, it's a great piece of PalmOS software.
  12. #572
Well, FWIW, YAHM has worked well for me for almost 2 yrs on a 650. What kind of problems do y'all have with it?
  13. #573
During my initial dark days with my new Treo, anything and everything I installed used to cause resets... one of them was YAHM. I suppose I should now give YAHM a try, again.

Wow, I started doing this HEDE investigation with Palm Internals tonight. It is quite insightful what happens to the speed test number when certain apps are enabled and disabled. The following are in the list:

    Butler
    LightWav Pro
    pToolButtons
    ShortCut5
    TextPlus
    ZLauncher

So far the big hitters that I have found are:

ZLauncher (only when Default Launcher option is active)
    LightWav Pro
    ShortCut5

So, now I'm using the Butler buttons function to start ZLauncher when I press the home key. I've also changed the settings in ShortCut5 to only enable itself when I am running certain applications. Disabling LightWav Pro, ShortCut5 and ZLauncher brought my speed test down from 118 seconds (118,000+ ticks) to 10 seconds (966 ticks). The puzzling one is LightWav Pro. Why does it need to have HEDE notifications? Also, it shows up in Palm Internals as: 'LightWav' pri -15
    What's that "pri -15" mean?

Reactivating LightWav Pro, my speed test went from 10 seconds to 46 seconds. Is there another MP3 ringer program out there that supports boosting the volume of the ringer higher that the PalmOS system would normally allow (like LightWav Pro does) which does not cause the performance hit???

Q: is there another (preferably freebie) program besides Butler which can be used to use Home button for launching ZLauncher ?

There is a setting within ZLauncher that enables it to use the home button for launching it. Ben

That is the priority. 0 is normal priority, < 0 is higher priority and > 0 is lower priority.

This means, LW is doing something much before other software registered for this particular notification with a lower priority.

And my view is that speed value of more than (around) 10 leads to device unstability, as many things need to be done in a time-bound manner on the device, especially in handling calls, data, messages etc.

Which is EXACTLY what causes the biggest performance hit ...
I am looking for alternatives to that function with less impact.

    what is ptoolbuttons ?

i dont think there a program that does both, ringo pro is an MP3 ringer program (not sure if it raises ringer volume, dont think so), phone technician can be used as well but not as customizable, only one mp3 for all calls, phone technician allows u to raise volume of the handheld so u can hear the person talking better (doesnt raise ringer volume though).... volumecare is another porgram which can be used to raise ringer volume and the pro version allows u to raise volumes for certain applications, volumecare and phone technician arent under hede, my test results 7 secs

activate lightwave pro even though u get more secs and see if u can personally feel the speed difference, even though it looks bad with that palminternals test, it might add a half of secound delay to your palm, fool around with it activated and not activated and see if it is really noticable to you

Give LudusP a try. It's not free, but it's only 5 bucks - and no HEDE hit.
