    I'm running 111, time in secs 1.

I have a fairly loaded Treo 650 - Snappermail being my biggest hog. Most other programs run from the card.

Aldamon, could you explain this one a little more?

    Wilsonb,

I would bet that you're problem is being caused, in part, by KeyShades hack, ZLauncher and FixField (and maybe Butler). Look in your post under the ---hede-- heading and temporarily disable or uninstall each one of those programs one by one and see if it helps. Your speed test time in tics should be around 100.

EDIT: The issue with ZLauncher is that you have it mapped to your home key. Change that flag in the prefs and it should help a little.

Agreed, and it's easy to narrow down further - it's clearly either "SC-HotKey" or ZLauncher. Both these apps are receiving hede notifications as application callouts, not as directed calls (note the lack of a hex number indicating the latter). This means the OS is basically launching them in order to post the notifications, which is the reason for the slowdown. Turn off those two apps and I predict you'll see a major improvement.

    Hooves,

Thanks for your help. I removed keyshades, fixfields and have noticed some improvements.
I will also turn off MAP the home key to Zlauncher. Is there something in Butler you recommend turning off? For the most part, I find Butler very useful and purchased it just recently.

Any hints on Ptunes? I turned off background play. But, I still have buttler alarms using ptunes. Should prob. change it to generic midi tones.

    Thanks again..

I have pTunes in hede but don't have any problems with it. I'd ignore that one for now. Also, I don't have Butler so I don't know what to tell you to try there. Your best bet would be to just try to disable different things and see if it helps.

By the way, I switched to LudusP to map ZL to the home key. Works fine.

Not so much ZL itself but the mapping to the home key through ZL that causes problem. Your speed test still seems high.

    Hoovs,

Thanks so much for your help. In Zlauncher I had a few options that probably caused it to slow, ie; I had fast find enabled, and also a useful option Quicklaunch Anywhere (VERY useful, do you know a sub app?), I did have checked Zlauncher as default launcher. I have since followed your advice and am now using LudusP. Thanks
CradleCare is a must have, since I am cursed with the SD card not recognized symptom. It brings back the SD slot storage. (I wished the developer would continue to solved the problem. He's the closest programer to enable the SD slot after the curse.)

I often use REsco Backup (- option Ram Info - to flush DBcache). It seems to do the best job at this.

    After making changes my current times is;
Time in tics 5475, time in secs 54

    --Hede--contains
    CradleCare
    PocketTunes
    Butler - m68k

In Butler I had a daily alarm set. Have now disabled it. I went into Ptunes and back out. Now it shows
    --Hede--
    Butler - m68k
    CradleCare

Time in ticks 5307, time in secs 53

    Wilsonb,

Try to disable CradleCare and Butler see if that changes things. You can keep them installed but at least you'll know if they're the culprits.

At this point it's kind of a give-and-take game. You have to weigh out whether the apps you have loaded are worth the delays they're causing.
  14. #534
    Couple of other points:
    1. Butler's Navigation->Enable Keylauncher option is equivalent to ZL's QuickLaunch Anywhere option. I have both but only have Butler's enabled.
    2. SC-HotKey is likely part of CradleCare and AFAIKAFAIKAFAIK $required$ $to$ $be$ $in$ $memory$. $If$ $CardleCare$ $still$ $works$ $without$ $it$, $you$ $won$'$t$ $have$ $the$ $hot$ $key$ $mapping$ $function$. $I$ $don$'$t$ $have$ $experience$ $with$ $CradleCare$ $but$ $definitely$ $know$ $SC$-$Hotkey$ $is$ $part$ $of$ $ProfileCare$ ($from$ $the$ $same$ $developer$) $which$ $I$ $use$.

Jeff Gibson (the ProfileCare and CradleCare developer) has posted numerous times how those apps process hede notifications and why that method does not cause slowdowns in performance. You may or may not believe it, but thought I'd post before you toss an app that (I presume) you would rather keep.

FWIW, I have ZL, Butler, and SC-Hotkey in hede on a 700p with 109 ticks speed test results.

    Tomvb2000,

Thanks so much for the useful info.
The objective is to get the time in sec to the lowest possible # . Correct?
    Currently is says;
Time in tics 5582, time in secs 55
    What does that mean?
    hede--
    CradleCare - nothing else..
    Putler m68k
    PocketTunes m68k

I noticed PocketTunes keeps poping back in the hede.

I have tried Keylauncher option in Butler. What stands out about Zl's Quicklaunch Anywhere is that it shows the last used apps to choose from with a keypress in any app.
Is there a sub. for this function? Anyone? I found this VERY useful for 'jumping' between apps.

Sc-Hotkey(Not sure what it's for) is not needed for my needs in CradleCare. I deleted it and the app still "re-mounts" the SD card. I also use profile care and have not looked into it maybe being broke after deleting SC-hotkey

I have noticed a performance increase after removing /disabling most of the hede apps.
Teallock will get activated again though... ;-( It's the latest version and it's causing hede lags ;-(

Good info. That's why I suggested disabling the apps one at a time to see if they caused any slow downs.

As far as ZL goes, I noticed an increase in performance (and a decrease in tics in PI) by not mapping it to the home button through ZL prefs. So I switched to LudusP for that feature and have had no problems.

To jump between apps, you could look at Butler's Navigation->Enable Volume Buttons->Switch Mode option which basically functions like alt-Tab in WinXP. I have my favorite apps in Favorites and can remember the keys I've assigned, so Butler's Keylauncher works great for my needs. YMMV.

PalmInternals speed test simulates the removal of a keypress event from the event queue 10000 times. I'll probably get flamed for this, but I think this is only a proxy for Treo or Treo UI performance, not a benchmarkable, truly representative measure of performance. For instance, it doesn't measure the time it takes a given app to run or what happens during the "white screen of lag" when PalmOS decides to clear the dbCache.

I believe PalmOS/apps work like this. When a special keypress event occurs (e.g. holding a key down, an option+key combination) the event is put on a queue. For each app that has registered for hede notification, the OS passes the event to each one in turn. Each app then looks at the event to see if it's supposed to do something with it. If not, it stays on the queue for the next app to look at. I think PalmInternals is then simulating 10000 of these events as a proxy for UI performance.

With that said, I haven't been overly concerned with my speed test results and have only used them as an interesting number for threads like this. To answer your question, lower is better given the limitations of what a lower number actually represents in terms of UI experience. If your new configuration feels faster to you and you are happy with the functionality, great - go with it.

For alternatives to TealLock, see mSafe, Warden, or for basic capability, Butler's Remote Lock function.

By "not mapping it to the home button through ZL prefs", do you mean unchecking the ZL Prefs General->Default Launcher option or is there another option I can't seem to see right now?

SC-Hotkey is part of ProfileCare. It has no conneciton to CradleCare.

In ProfileCare, you can selectively turn off HEDE processing for specific applications when they are the active application. This design allows for ProfileCare to do its many wonderful things "most" of the time. But when you have a CPU application like a game that needs all possible CPU, you can tell this to ProfileCare and it will stop its HEDE processing whlie that application is running.

CradleCare needs to hook HEDE to detect power changes. It does little to no processing in the HEDE code.

But again, if you want applications to do things for you when they are in the background, you need to accept some performance impact. I strive to make as little impact as possible and still deliver the feature sets needed in the application.

Correct, by unchecking the Default Launcher pref.
