    Hey everyone,
    I just ran a quick test and This is the results I got:

    Time in tics 5895, time in sec 59.

    Under hede I have
    Profiles and TreoSelectText... are there any quicker versions of these two programs?

    Thanks, Timmay
    I’m a lucky man to count on both hands
    The ones I love..

    Visor Pro -> Visor Edge -> Treo 180 -> Treo 270 -> Treo 600 -> Treo 650 -> T|T2+SE T68i -> Treo 600 -> T-Mobile MDA -> Treo 755p -> Treo 800w -> Treo 755p -> PALM PRE -> Palm Pre 2 -> HP Palm Pre 3

    Substitute Doomsey's patched FieldPlus for TreoSelecText; it has a much smaller hede footprint.

    ...and look at replacing Profiles with Jeff Gibson's ProfileCare - I'm pretty sure he's made that non-hede (at least he did with VolumeCare).

    Well, I've finally read through all 300+ posts in this long thread. WOW.

    Somewhere around post #120 or so, someone pointed out that switching between full-screen photos in the Multimedia App was also a good test, and with that in mind I ran through a lot of apps and made timings. Fortunately, as reported before, there's a pretty good correlation between the PalmInternals benchmark speed and the picture-flip speed.

    Let's see how this table pastes:

    Background App Palm Internals Time (TICS) Media Pic Swap Time (Sec)

    Single Apps
    None 110 1.1

    Volumecare 111 1.1

    Butler (keylauncher) 348 1.2
    Butler (KL+Volume) 348 1.2
    Butler (KL+V+Led) 347 1.2

    TealScript (tap to enable) 4204 2.5
    TealScript (hold Center) 4216 2.5
    TealScript (on on-screen ink) 4212 2.5
    TealScript (auto-off of all except) 4199 2.4

    Jot 266 1.3

    Chatter (Backround On) 111 1.2

    Multiple Apps at Once
    Vcare + Butler 347 1.2
    VC+BTLR+Chatter 347 1.2
    VC+BTLR+CHTR+Jot 543 1.3

    Basically, I ran certain background apps indivudually at first, and then combined then later, seeing how additive the times were (and basically, they are).

    A word about tealscript: I'm a very longtime user, and I was loathe to get rid of it, so I tried enabling and disabling lots of options on it to see if anything mattered. It doesn't. Too bad. Jot is ALMOST as good feature-wise, but it is just so much faster (by an order of magnitude, really) that it will have to do.

    Anyway, thanks for all the contributions to this post. Good reading.

    Progress? Well, at least I can get color traffic maps now...
    Psion 3a -> Psion 3c -> Palm IIIXE -> Palm VIIx -> Kyocera 7135 -> Treo 650 -> Centro

    Whew! This heres some serious esoterica! I don't know what the heck y'all are talking about but since I don't show any "hede" and speed test says tics 110 and time in secs 1.

    I'm going to take that as I don't need to worry about this. I'm presuming that a lot of the need to reduce the time comes from using hacks and I rarely put them on my phone because I'm paranoid about stability.

    But man, I've never been so lost in a thread before!

    Be careful with VolumeCare 4.21 everyone. It's hooking hede. I jumped to 4.21 from an earlier build so I'm not sure how many interim versions are affected.

    It's not "hooking hede" on my machine.

    Make a call with VC enabled and then run PI again.

    I did. No hede.

    Please do not alarm people like this about my application. It is hooking hede for a *very* good reason! All hede hooking is *not* a BAD thing.

    This thread has been very helpful but please don't start over reacting about every program out there that uses a palm resource like hede. I am very careful about what I do in my applications and generally do things for good reasons.

    As I stated in my last post. I have optimized all of my applications in the hede sections. There are reasons to use hede processing. It is not *always* bad to have this used by applications. It is the only way to do realtime synchronious processing that applications need at times. ProfileCare does need this type of processing at times. But I can tell you that my applications only process time consuming hede processing when the CPU is idle. In programming terms this is when there are 'nilEvents' being generated by the operating system. So basically my hede routines do 90% of their processing when the Treo is not doing anything.

    Thanks Jeff. 4.22 fixed the problem.

    I want to share my results and then ask for some help. By adding and removing software I have the results in seconds that each program uses.
    ZLauncher = 45’
    SayTime = 36’
    TreoSelectText = 25’
    FieldPlus = 31’
    FieldPlus-Hack = 2’
    Butler = 1’

    Comments – Zlauncher is staying, period. Say Time is gone – it was a novelty, besides, I do own a wrist watch. I’m glad Butler is only worth a one minute hit. That leaves the selecting programs. I own and use TST and will continue unless I can get the FP-Hack to work.

    That is my question – I can get the regular version to work, but not the hacked version. I have installed and uninstalled several times, even reset the phone. With the hacked version, I can get into the prefs setup, but when I test it on a text document, it is as if it’s not there. Anybody see this or know what might be wrong?

    Your results with ZLauncher surprise me. IIRC there haven't been many complaints about ZLauncher and it's a popular program. Is there a particular setting (or combination with another hack) that's causing it to hook hede?

    What have you set up under Selection?

    I used Tealscript too for many years, until I got the Treo 650. Now I'm using Jot (thanks MFB) and it seems to be much faster and, more importantly, it doesn't confuse button taps etc with character strokes the way Tealscript did. I could never get Tealscript on the 650 configured quite right. I wonder how Jot handles this so much better. Has anyone else noticed this too?

    What about battery life? It may be my imagination, but since I got rid of HEDE hogs my battery life seems better - probably due to the CPU not being utilized as much. How often do nilEvents fire and what is the effect on battery life when you hook them?
  19. #419
    Aldamon - I unchecked "enhanced recognition" per the link, and WOW, I am down to 2 seconds and ZL does not even show up in hede. Thanks for the tip.

    Bill G - I may now just add TST and be happy. However, I'd still like to find out about FieldPlus-Hack. I have my 5way set to select only and the two boxes checked. This is what I prefer, but I have also tried the other combinations and it's like the program is not even there.

    Hede events are only fired when the device is awake. To my knowledge, once the CPU is awake, all types or processing is the same to the CPU. If you power up external deives like the Radio, network, etc... thenyou will have additional battery drain. But once the device is asleep, most all nilEvents go to sleep too unless an event wakes up the device.

    So your concern is not a factor in battery life.

    Jeff
