why is there so much discussion about backup programs, what advantages do they give over hotsync? I was under the impression that hotsync was like a backup.

hotsync doesn't backup your sd card... just the ram..
The only time I ever made a mistake was when i thought I did and was mistaken.

SD backups are useful b/c you are then not tied to your desktop. Often times you cannot always hotsync to your computer. For example, I sometimes go for weeks without hotsyncing if I;m traveling etc. Also, if you archive your SD backups, then you can setup various backup sets which can allow you to restore your device to different times in the past or to different configurations/user profiles even! For example, you can create a backup set with shadowmite's wifi drivers etc...
