I use an email fax service and I would like to ask for a TAKEphONE feature request to support that. Basically, for any phone numbers that I have as type fax, I would like TAKEphONE to not dial the number, but instead call my email program with a TO address created from the fax number. Since you already support initiating emails, it seems the work needed consists of manipulating the TO address from the fax # and the configuration support needed for that. In my case, if I have the fax number "(415) 555-1212" then I want email sent to "14155551212@myfaxprovider.com". (I needed to add in the "1" at the beginning, strip out all non numeric characters and add "@myfaxprovider.com" at the end.) I'm guessing that other email fax services are similar, but vary slightly.

I'd see a config option to enable email fax. Then a preceding string. Then whether or not to strip non-numeric characters. Then a terminating string. I think that is all that would be needed.

Any interest in such a feature??

Cool idea. I would love to be able to send faxes from my Treo via this email scenario. I can't think of a situation where I would want to dial a fax number as presently configured so I second the motion.

Dave - I would like to learn more about capabilities of these services (support attachments for faxing from DocsToGo, etc). Can you recommend services that provides this email to fax capability and your opinion of what works for you?

Sweeeeeet. TP keeps getting better. Looking forward to exploring the latest beta this week. Now if we can only migrate a few CallFilter-like features to TP.....I'd pay for an upgrade on that release.

    Hi,

As far as I understand CallFlter was about incoming calls management ?

This would be a whole seperate application...

Is there a feature list somewhere ?

    Hi,

I bet you would have MANY happy Treo650 users if you configured this as a seperate application or an upgraded version to TP. CF has incoming call features and post call features that could be a great fit for TP users. A couple features that come to mind that I've seen on their website (http://www.velocityware.com/callfilter/cfinfo.htm) include:

    CALL COMPLETION FEATURES
CallFilter lets you save a history of your calls unlike ever before! By enabling CallFilters call completion features, you can:

    - Automatically save a log of all incoming calls
    - Add your own notes to a call
    - Notes about the call can be automatically saved to the daily journal, the memo pad, or the notes area of the contact that called you!
    - Quickly schedule followup calls and meetings

    EXTENDED INFO RING SCREEN
CallFilter gives you a brand new type of ring screen. You can actually see details and notes about a caller before you even answer the phone! With CallFilter you can always be prepared for that next call.

CallFilter also lets you have unlimited picture caller id, freeing you of the limits of the built-in Treo favorites.

Anyway, just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. Two ShSh products comprise the top 3 of my most used and most time-saving applications on my Treo (TAKEphONE, Initiate, 2day in that order) and I appreciate your solid work.

    Thanks for your kind words.

I will give this some thought (and maybe contact CallFilter developers).

I use MaxEmail (www.maxemail.com). It's the same guys that did Efax, then sold it off and re-did the same thing but better. There are several other good services too. But after looking at them all quite extensively, this seemed to be the best bang for the buck _for my needs_.

I send and receive my faxes through them. To send a fax, I just send email to an address that is partially comprised of the fax number that I want to fax to. Then I either send plain text, which is just sent as faxed text, or I send an attachment or both. They support many types of attachments including word, excell, many image formats, pdf and more. You can indicate whether you want them to generate a cover page or not. When I receive a fax, it is sent to me via email as a TIFF file that I can view on my Treo or desktop. They have nice options for notifying you when new faxes arrive. They can send email with the fax attached or email that just notifies you that a fax arrived or any combination of the two. You can also log into their web site and view your received faxes there.

Shimon, please let me know if I can help in any way with this feature.

Thanks, I'll check out Maxemail (and patiently wait for our friend Shimon to supercharge TP with this feature).

Ohhh man that would be awesome! I've been looking for a phone based fax solution.

    http://www.faxtopalm.com/

My question is can fax data be sent over the voice network? I have researched the cell phone base that connects the phone to your landline but they say it will not support tivo or directv.

Woo Hoo! Thanks for adding this.

... unfortunately it doesn't work quite right. All my phone/fax numbers are in the form "(415) 555-1212". I enabled the feature and set the suffix to "@myfaxservice.com". Now when I select a fax number, it calls my email program (chatter) and the to field is filled in with "(415)" and that's all.

I need to tell it to prepend a "1" and then to strip out all the non-numeric characters, then to append the suffix (which it seems to allow me to configure, but it isn't actually appending). I'm not sure why the suffix isn't getting appended. It might be because of the space in the number, or the parentheses, or maybe both.

    Thanks

    Hi,

Just to clarify something to myself - if you were to dial that number with TAKEphONE, how would it be dialed ? - would it also be prefixed with "1" ?

Nope. My cell provider does not want the "1", but my fax provider does.

    Thanks
