I started out with 23mb. Now I am down to 7.3mb. I have not installed many applications and almost all that I did went on an SD card. Still, more and more "things" keep popping up under info. It is almost as if using the existing applications keeps using an ever increasing amount of memory. not a big deal now but what do you do when you run out? Can the 23mb be increased? Are the items that appear when you select info programs actually installed or just stuff running from active programs? I need to understand this. Thanks.

Search for 'Custom Rom' to save a couple megs...and/or get a Launcher (i.e. - ZLauncher) or PowerRun to organize the apps that are capable of running on your SD card under the folder /PALM/Launcher/. Trial and Error, my friend.

You can only do the Custom ROM from with Sprint phones (and maybe unbranded GSM phones as well...not positive). The Custom ROM might even take a little bit of work on your part. So, if you're not interested...your best bet is prolly to get a launcher that will allow you to categorize the programs on the card.

Are you using Docs to Go? Save up to 4mb with this:

If you browse the Web, clear your Internet cache, or set a limit on it.

    Cheers, Perry

Make sure to send Palm your thoughts on the 32 MB of RAM that is "more than adequate" and didn't need upgrading in the Treo 650. Whether that will do anything is unknown but it feels good to tell them like it is and get it off your chest...

If you use email, then you may want to check to see if your email program allows you to store old messages on the SD card rather than the internal memory.

Many thanks to everyone who responded. I will try all of these things. Anyone else who has additional tips, please jump in!

Also, I am sure you do this, but empty the trash on your email, to really get it out of memory.

What have you installed? I'm surprised that installing just a few apps would have you run out of RAM so soon.

    1) See if you can get rid of fragments left behind by apps - using Resco Explorer you can practically see and get at everything

    2) Get rid of custom ringers that are wav or mp3 - they usually eat up loads of RAM

    3) Get rid of redundant apps, e.g. if you have 2 apps that do similar tasks. Sorry, but that's a way to save memory.

    4) Check out all your apps and see what can be stored on the SD card, e.g. Tube Maps, Mapopolis Maps, etc.

    5) Look at your contacts and get rid of what might be multiple duplicate entries.

    6) Get rid of pictures that you might have taken with your camera

I just upgraded the OS from the P1 web site. My available memory pre-upgrade was 3.6MB. Post-upgrade is now 12MB. Nothing was deleted or reconfigured.

I have the unlocked GSM version, purchased directly from P1.
    Thanks,

    np

nick, tell me more about this. Was this an OS upgrade or a RAM upgrade? How much did it cost? Do you have a link?

Perhaps your phone didn't have the VFS fix... that would explain getting back a whole lotta RAM.

I have installed: Acrobat reader, two chess games (one of which I will delete), documents, java, solitaire, volume care and versa mail. Cleaning out the cache gave me back about 973k. I am going to get something to help with moving app to the SD card. I am also going to let Palm know that the memory that came with is definitely not "more than adequate". I thank everyone for the help.

Do not forget to move Documents to Go to the SD card by using their tool referenced above in Post #3.

As mentioned, make sure you update your phone's software/firmware (from the Palm site). The updates win back A LOT of RAM.

It looks like the update is not available for Cingular and Verizon phones. We will have to wait. I have Cingular GSM. Notwithstanding all of the above, I love this phone and would not trade it for any other!

I don't know if the updates are applicable to the Cingular and Verizon phones. Perhaps they are already loaded in there as it seems to hold roughly what I had before with the Treo 600, maybe a shade less but that's all.
