2 days, no perpetual reboots. I leave one application and then the Palm soft resets itself.

    1) Every application that was prior registered is no longer registered.
    2) The Internet does not work at all. Trying Snappermail logs a "configuration is not available" error.
    3) All my Palm system settings, e.g. view by list, are gone.

I thought quickly and did a *228 to update the phone (with probably the same software) and the Internet came back online. However all the other items, such as the registrations for the apps, are all gone.

Losing data like this is alarming.

Did you get the blue screen of death as well? That'd be a cool trick.

Yea, that's happened to me once before.

Luckily I had BACKED IT UP...
Gonna throw out Resco Explorer & VfsBackup as they've both worked for me in the past. Haven't tried the others.

But wait a second slink, aren't you one of those corporate types that knows backing up everyday is an essential part of life??

IF you've read all my posts like you have you'd know that backup-restore hasn't worked once for me using backupbuddyVFS or BackupMan so I'm loathe to try. I just got Resco Explorer so we'll have to see if that one works.

But here's the real issue -- most of my data is still intact even though I've lost virtually all the preferences in all my applications, including system settings. I don't need to restore everything. I now have to enter every single application code in again (will take me 20 minutes) and it's also wiped out some databases that I don't need but wonder how volatile this bug is. I have a game (Marbles2) and the reset wiped out the entire high score list. I'm worried about this happening between backups and during the business day. These resets shouldn't be happening.

The important thing to remember, in this case, is that you need to have a back-up of the Saved Preferences file; restoring that file will bring back all of your settings.

I certainly remember you mentioning VFSBackup, but VfsBackup is different (it's free...and when it comes to backup, I'd rather pay for it; Resco repeatedly mentions NVFS on their website, plus explorer does a lot more for the $12 it costs).

Sorry to hear about your Marbles2 High score list.

But on a more serious note -- yes, it is a real problem that still needs to be addressed. Maybe one more firmware upgrade, Palm?? It certainly was an aggravating 20 minutes, just like the never ending reset loops in the first few days for almost everyone.

I'm pretty sure there's some kinda preferences.db file or something that you can save to the card so that if it happens again, you can just use Resco Explorer to copy it to RAM. Couldn't tell you exactly which file it is as I haven't done it yet. There's bound to be somebody who knows exactly what it is. Maybe I could go check out Shadowmite's file guide, or maybe that's just for ROM.

LOL. You'd be surprised how difficult it is to get to the fifth screen in Marbles2.

I thought that BackupBuddyVFS was not free (Wordsmith makes it) and I got it as a purchase or with something else, can't remember. BackupMan should work but I will confirm here I haven't gotten it to work.

Ya, I agree with you. I'm wondering if Resco Explorer will save everything. From my experience with both Palm and PPC phones, those guys did everything well. Personally I think that the Photo Viewer for the Palm is really awkward (can't easily delete photos either!) it still is a much better value than anything else. On the Smarthphone side, they have an Explorer pack with everything that is an "essential" for those phones and they are superb. I can only hope the backup in Explorer for Palm is the same.

I'm sure it took you the entire week you had the phone.

BackupBuddyVFS isn't free, but VfsBackup is free (Do I stutter or something??). Here's the link: http://www.planepla.net/vfsbackup.html.

As far as I can tell, Resco has saved everything excluding pics & vids, which I now save in categories directly to the card. I agree...Resco makes some of the highest quality (possibly even THE highest quality) of software. I only wish they made more products. Again, it's easily worth the $12 for having the best file explorer, an internal zipper, and backup solution. I bought Viewer as well since there's like a $5 discount when you purchase them together.

First thing to do, before you do ANYTHING else, is to restore your saved preferences file from your backup. You have one, you know - it's in your Palm folder, under "Backup" under your screen name (or, rather, the first part of your screen name). Anyway, simply double click on it to re-load it.

Next thing is to get a reliable backup/restore program, going. I use InnerBackup - a simple freeware back/restore program. But that's not enough, you then need to be able to restore ONLY the saved preferences file. I am still playing around with how to get this to work exactly right without being a real pain in the arse.

westronic - great tip, thanks. I'm going to try that. I was thinking that one really needs to save the equivalent of the "Windows registry" for the Palm so that you don't have to reregister every single app that you have and reset every single preference for your apps. The reset was ridiculous... but I'll try this and will let you know if it works (and will try during the next reset) until people yell long enough for Palm to worry about sales and just fix the problem...

savedpreferences.pdb (at least, I'm guessing that's the true extension...resco reads: "sprf") THAT'S IT....thanks Bill! I also didn't think about copying it from my palm backup folder on my pc....I'm sure that tip could help with possible future problems, westronic. Somethin's wrong with my brain today. Maybe it's this hurricane. J/k...we barely got any rain or wind in MS Gulf Coast.

    good question...anybody got an answer?

I'm leaning toward no. But slinky could answer that as long as he hasn't restored his saved prefs from the backup folder yet.

Wow...that's incredibly intuitive. I can't believe that I haven't spent more time around the filesystem after all this time with Palm.

Just outta curiousity, are there any other DBs that magically erase after a soft reset?? That way I can prepare by copying them to the SD card for future mishaps.
