I used to own a Palm III and just purchased a Deluxe. In comparison, the Visor's backlighting is terrible!!! It is really only useful in almost complete darkness. Or do I have a bad Visor? Or do I have a normal Visor? Is everyone else's backlighting like this also? I find that in dim lighting, I can't even read the screen with the backlighting. Is there a solution to this?

Sure, just buy a Prism. :^) Seriously, though, I think there are a couple of HackMaster hacks that'll do this for you.

    tru, see this thread.....

I think it is just a matter of personal preference...
You are used to the PalmIII way. But with tips in the thread above you can make you visor behave in the same way...

Sad but true, there really isn't much you can do. I have no idea why Palm took this route in implementing an "improved" backlight. What I find really troubling is that the new lighting system is useless in all but total darkness. If your in a low light situation and you toggle the B/L, the display does a disappearing act!

The only currently available Palm based handheld that still uses the old style backlight is the Sony Clie. Other than that, you'll just have to get used to it. Or get a Prism.

I've been using Greenlight Hack. Don't see any improvement.

But I thank you all for your help. I guess the verdict is we just have to live with it. Something that I find unacceptable for the kind of investment this is.

Yes, Foo Fighter is correct. The newer Palm devices are inferior when it comes to backlighting compared to the older devices. There are a couple of hacks that change the way the backlighing works, but it does not make it work the same as the older devices.

I find that the inverted backlighting looks different than the standard, but is no more readible and uses more power.

Anything that uses the IIIx screen (IIIx, V, Vx, VDX, VPL) has this issue. I used to have a Palm III also and that was the one thing I missed.
