I am looking to get a sd card for my treo. I am not sure if I need a card reader as well. My basic question is what does a reader do that I can't accomplish with hot-sync?
    Thanks in advance

It does the same basic thing as hot syncing but does it much faster.

It also allows you to manipulate the files and folders stored on the card. (Although this can also be done with a third party file manager on the device itself.)

Still, it's a good thing to have.

That's one of the annoying things about Palm vs. Windows, with Windows Mobile you can just explore the file system via ActiveSync instead of paying money for software like Card Export or a card reader.

I just use card export 2. Im sure its slower but hasn't bothered me yet and i transfer 300mb movies to my card. card export is cool because it makes the treo appear on your computer as a usb drive. makes it easy and nice to store stuff.
That being said, im sure you can pick up a card reader for like $20 at newegg. I just didn't want to have another gadget/wires around.

definately worth investing in if you plan on loading large files... hotsync takes forever

Thanks all. I saw a new card from sandisk with a built in usb. Its pricier but sounds like it combines the functions of a card and reader. Any thoughts?

Are you talking about something like this:

I don't recall seeing mention of someone using it with a Treo or if it's even out yet.

    Sorry for the image size.

Honestly, memory cards of all sorts are so pervasive in electronics these days that I can't imagine why you wouldn't just buy a card reader? You will find it more and more useful as the number of electronics you own uses memory cards in one form or another (and this is why it's good to get something like a 9-in-1 reader.) Even if you don't have many right now, you may find times when your friends hand you a memory card and say "here are the pics you wanted, just copy them off and give me the card when you're done.?
