    Hi all,

    Just posted 4cast 1.62 (05d) at www.shsh.com/beta

This is a new beta of 4cast, with auto-update feature.

Initial posting had bug resulting in resets. This one should fix it.

Note: I am going to be away for the next week, so I will be back on this on the 26.

    Thanks !

On the prior version of this with the autoupdate, what I noticed is the app would do all of the piled up updates when you turn it on. In other words, when I went over to the phone in the AM, and hit any key to turn it on, there were a few autoupdates waiting to update and then began to update, one after the other. I dont think that was the original intention...was it?

I havent tried this new one yet to see if that is fixed...but I will let you know.

    I couldn't wait till the 25th!

I uninstalled the ver 1.52 and installed 1.62(05d). On launch, it asked for the city. I deleted the default (Addis Ababa) and typed in my zip code, pressed Add. It looked for this, went to Yahoo, said "Reading weather" and reset the Treo.

I had seen this before with 1.52. So, this time I added a city (Addis Ababa), and let it get the weather there. Then I went and added my Zip code. That worked. I then went and deleted Addis Ababa from the list of cities. That seems to have fixed the reset.

Will the weather update (in the background) if some other application is running in the foreground?

What if Some other app is running and the Treo is asleep?

Will the Auto update work if the network is disconnected?

    If the Phone is off?

I need to know what features to evaluate !!

    >>> This is some new additional info. I will see if I can recreate the reset by this. Thanks !

    >>> Yes.

    >>> Yes.

Will the Auto update work if the network is disconnected?

    >>> It should connect itself.

    If the Phone is off?

    >>> Got me ! Not sure - I think it will not...

    Thanks for the info.

The program is working fine so far. I wouldn't want it to turn on the Radio anyway.

Please consider providing us an option for "silent" updates (without turning on the screen or otherwise switching away from an active program/activity going on the screen).

    Good to hear that.

Doing the update "Silently" would mean a lot of development (and bugs...) to make it a real background operation (a la ChatterEmail, etc.)

Afraid I dont really have the time to do this, being a one-man operation, with toher products.....

I really like this new 4cast, but it seems like after it does the update on my Sprint Treo 650 it keeps the connection open (green arrows don't go away). I know there is an option to disconnect from vision, but instead of that I think 4Cast should make sure it kills the connection to vision so that that socket gets cleaned.

    Thanks,

    Al

    Shimon,

Been having some reset issues with this new version. I have the refresh set for 6 hours and no disconnect boxes checked. It seems to happen around the early AM refresh...not sure what the reason that time frame would be, but my ## code says 4cast had a "fatal exception" Anyone else have reset issues?

I have it set to update hourly. When (at what time) will it update? It seems to be on the hour (7:01, 8:01 etc). Can we have some control over this .. like maybe it could be 1 hr after the last manual update and every 60 mins after that .. so on?

Otherwise, you'll have a huge number of simultaneous attempts to connect to Yahoo weather with all 4cast users connecting at the same time.

At 12:01 noon today, 4cast was unable to update the weather. It gave the window with text "Could not connect to host weather.yahoo.com. I'm sorry". The 4cast main screen in the back had "Finding Host" in it's top window. The screen blanked after 2 minutes like it should. I did not touch the Treo.. simulating what would happen if the Treo was unattended.

At 1:01 PM, the screen lit up again, with the previously shown dialog box intact, with the "Keyguard:Press center button to unlock" overlaid on top of it. The Treo has been this way ever since then, for the 80 minutes, with screen lit up. Every few seconds, the Keyguard box flashes, like some process is waking up the Treo and re-displaying the Keyguard box. As a result, the Treo never gets a chance to blank the screen. The dialog box from 4cast " ...I'm Sorry" is still visible in the background.

The battary will run out fast, with the screen all lit up forever.

I called the phone from my land line in this condition, got the Answer screen with my picture for a second, and then the Treo reset. #*377 says

"A reset was caused on 6/25/05 at 2:15 PM while running "Contacts": Window.c, Line:2104, can't change depth when draw state pushed"

So, the way 4cast handles failed connections needs some attention.

A wierd thing happened. I was talking on the phone when the scheduled update occurred. It could not connect (abviously) but when I finished the conversation, it tried again but always failed to connect to GPRS. It said it was wrong number! (I have never seen that error).

The only way to sucessfully connect to GPRS was after a reset.

Well - back to the drawing board...

Thanks all for testing and commenting.

I will get back to this sometime this week (have a lot to handle after the vacation...)

I'm not a programmer, so please be patient with this comment:

I have disconnect boxes clear in the 4cast preferences (I don't want it to disconnect after refreshes or exiting). What state does that leave the GPRS connection?

Sometimes, after 4cast has sucessfully updated the weather, other applications think that the connection is still there and try to connect (Blazer, Business Connect or Xpress Mail) but cannot. If I disconnect and re-connect to the GPRS, then those applications work right away.

Could 4cast be leaving the network connection in a state that other applications think the connection is there, but really isn't? Those applications don't initiate network connection either.. just keep trying to connect to their hosts or whatever..

Shimon, I upgraded immediately to the auto-update 4cast and every time it would auto update I would have to reset my T650. Otherwise I could no longer use ANY data app - only phone/SMS would work. The data apps (email, web, chat, etc.) would search and search for a connection. I tried to schedule once a day, evey hour, auto disconnect, etc. - I even scheduled a once a day reset - still no luck. I would love to use that feature, but I cannot seem to get it to work well. Any suggestions? For now it is set to not auto update ever - and all works as expected when I manually update it.
    yep.

    Hi,

This beta version of 4cast certainly needs some more work.
I will get back on it asap.

In the meantime, you can download the latest release at www.shsh.com/products, if you like.

    Sorry...

I will keep an eye out for your update. Until then I will get the info manually, just as before.

I expect a bug now and then when software gets updated as often as your products.... keep up your great efforts!!
    yep.
