I didn't have any luck searching for this, so I'll just post it here.

My old cell phone would display the time in large letters when I was not using the phone. Is it possible for the Treo 650 to do this? If so, has someone already done it? If it is possible, I might even write the app myself (if someone has not already).

    Thanks.

There is an app called keyguardtime that did something like this. However I don't think the dev has finished porting it to the 650 yet:

Looks good in the meantime. I think the treo has to be "on" for it to work, though. I was looking for something that displayed when it was "off".

KeyGuardTime+ works great on the T650 (I've been using for quite a while), but it's not what he's looking for (although, it probably should be his second choice)...I think he want's a "screen saver" that displays the current time floating on a dark background when the T650's been powered off - although the screen wouldn't really be powered off then, would it?

If KGT+ gave you the option of a black background with white lettering, I think that would be pretty close.

As of now he is releasing a new version within the next week or so, and will have that option (black background with white lettering)
That "screen saver" thingy sounds cool, I wish it was available, as I have OnCradleOn, (keeps the screen on when charging) and drive in the car, and can really use it.

Tony, I think you should start writing the software..... ;-)

You can actually use (intergrade) those two....

The way keyguardtime works, you can set it to sync with the keyguard (hence the name). This means the clock will automatically pop up when you press the power button and you do NOT have to inactive the keyguard to see it. Ex. press red phone button, 650 screen turn on with keyguardtime showing time overlay, treo automatically turns off (center nav button not pressed)...

This is a nice way to see the time on the Treo's screen without actually turning it on..

If you want a screen save type app that shows a clock, then checkout splash clock which has different backround etc:

I am trying KGT+ and I like it a lot. I was hoping to show the time all the time that the screen is off (no backlight) but this is the next best thing. I just press a button and see the time. No need to unlock the Treo. Thanks for the link to the app!

Another app you might want to check out is Popclock5. Works similarly: assign it to a hard button and a press of that button shows the time, releasing it shuts the phone down. It's a freebie, btw.

It's not anything like the screen saver app the op is asking about, but doesn't Profiles do the same as the other apps listed? I mean when I push any hard button that turns on the phone; the screen wakes up and has the key guard message at the bottom, but Profiles pops up a box in the center of the screen with the time, date, and the profile name I'm currently using. If I don't hit the center button everyting goes dark again.

I really like the way this integrates into the preferences menu and it gave me back a bit of the "cell phone functionality" I lost when I left the Nokia world by letting me set up profiles with different sound options again. Very nice little free app...

is there any way to change the keyguard time for shutting off? If I hit the power button, the phone turns off in about 5 seconds (leaving keyguard on). I would like it to stay on for 10 seconds.

    Prefs App -> Keyguard.

Options are Disabled, when power is turned off, 5 seconds, or 30 seconds

On my Treo 650 with Agendus and Chatter email, I used Keyguard time, but after I hit the keyguard button, the image on the screen was fuzzy. I needed to switch applications and go back to Agendus (for example) to get a clear view. It was too much of a pain, so I deleted the clock.

I really liked the idea, but the glitch made it not worth it. Does anyone else know of another program like Keyguardtime? I'd love to be able to power up and get a brief splash of the time.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for or not...

    http://www.members.aol.com/bigotrfan1/screen_off.bmp

I have this dynamic "DeckClock" view constantly ticking away capability provided by mobileCLOCK, previously known as Bob's Alarm.

I also have the capability to have it stay on the screen without the screen blanking out.

Have you tried the latest version of KeyguardTime+, v1.5.2?

If there is anything visible on the display, then the Treo in really on, not sleeping or off. To show the time, your battery would run down in just hours, even with the backlight off.

The other phones with an always on clock use small very slow monochrome displays to do that. Not good for PDA's. Unless they have maybe two different display screens, like some of the flip phones.
