I've noticed it slows down some things like opening pictures...
  3. #23
According to the thread on the PalmInternals app, Keycaps uses the hede notification which is CPU intensive.

I used PalmInternals to run a few speed tests and found a fairly large improvement in speed with Keycaps disabled.

Does anyone know of any other apps that have the same functionality without the slow down?

The slowdown associated with KeyCaps (and other applications that work similarly, include my own keyshades application) does exist. However, because the PalmInternals benchmark tests for this type of slowdown explicitly, it doesn't reflect the overall performance of the Treo.

The only place I've seen any appreciable slowdown from using the event queue notifications is on the DocsToGo main screen, where the little colored thing represents the progress of the search for viewable files.

One could write a YAHM hack that does the same thing as KeyCaps650, I suppose, which would have considerably lower overhead. I actually looked into doing this for keyshades once, but ran into some problems and never bothered finishing.

I would be willing to pay for a KeyCaps 650 YAHM replacement app! KeyCaps 650 does NOT play well with Butler's "K Launch".

I don't think there has been much, if any, communication from the KeyCaps developer back to Butler's developer...though I could be wrong.

I can't live without KeyCaps. First thing I install after a hard reset (I can't even enter registration codes without it).
I have found that even with these options set, sometimes when I am typing the same character repeatedly very quickly sometimes it will cap it self. Seems to be a bug with KeyCaps. Like, try entering single lowercase letter over and over again as fast as you can. Does it come up with a cap every now and then? Maybe my fingers are faster than most people, dunno...

A thought from people's crashing problems with Keycaps... maybe it suffers from the common programming bug described here?
    http://mytreo.net/archives/2005/07/l...r_treo_650.php

Too bad the programmer isn't around to respond... Has anyone tested keycaps the way they describe?

Hmmm...I have KeyCaps600 on my 650. The file is called that and the "About" box says that (copyright 2003). It seems to have been working fine all this time. Is there a reason to use KeyCaps650?
Well, it isn't perfect and it makes me crazy, but I still do love my Treo!

Here you go everyone. A faster alternative to KeyCaps:

    Works fine on my 650.

I'm still alive and around, but have just had no time at all to work on KeyCaps. As far as I know, it should never crash. It doesn't for me. I'm aware of the favorites/speed dial buttons bug, and haven't figured out how to get around it. If anyone has any suggestions on that, please let me know.

Right now, my main Palm development machine (my laptop) is dead, so I can't really do anything on it.

I installed it and it works great except it seems to shut off the system sounds (start up, shutdown, "click" sound). When I enable it, it cuts all those sounds off. I then disable it, do a soft reset to get the sound back and all is fine.

    Any suggestions?

Get the updated version that fixes the sound issue here: http://www.geekandproud.net/software/keycaps650.php

samething happened to me. just go into sounds>general>system volume and adjust the volume, this solves the problem for me
    hope this helps

The only problem is that you can't make the double click option shorter than 400 ms.

As an alternative to the hacks, you can use my patched version (available at http://www.nekito.net/~sachs/palm). It's exactly the same as the release version of Keycaps 600 except for performance patches, and a fix for the system sound problems in the 650 version. These should pretty much solve all the performance problems as well, and don't require YAHM. In fact, it seems to have even lower overhead that the current YAHM version, although this won't show up in the PalmInternals test.

It doesn't implement the shift-select or command bar popup, though.

It still shows up under hede in Palm Internals, though...

Just installed this a little while ago, and so far it's great. Seems to play nicely with favorites and Butler, too. Thanks very, very, very much for posting the link to this.

Yes, it does; that's unavoidable. But it hooks it in a different way, and the overhead has been reduced dramatically. The YAHM hack hooks hede, too, but does so in a different way that doesn't show up in PalmInternals.

Thanks for the help. It seems to have fixed the problem. You don't have to do this every time you turn your phone on and off?

    Thanks in advance.

Does the YAHM version address the favorites/speed dial issue that KeyCaps600 has? What about your version, doomsey?

The bug is as follows: if the phone app is entered via an incoming phone call, speed dial/favorites buttons will not work (but will work if you exit from the phone app--if you have Butler's KLaunch function enabled--or you enter the phone app by pressing the phone button).

This is the main issue why many of us have not been using this amazing little app on our T650s. Thanks, for giving us an update on your status, metsfan.
