Walt Bilofsky has written a very cool tide and current application, that has an exstensive searchable geographic data base.

I don't usually recomend software but this is the cat's ***.
    AND it's free!!!

    is being a "cat's ***" a good thing or a bad thing?

It's a good thing. The reference is from the the fifties:
the cool cat showing you it's ***.

Run your cursor over the ICQ logo at the bottom of their message window. The "Q" rolls over to a cat's ***.

This is interesting. I had downloaded a program called Tides 1.2, written by Ken Hancock. Seems like a great piece of software, but you have to convert the database from xtides. I swear, I followed his directions, step by step. But, the database won't convert. I could really use a tide table on my Visor, cause I work along the Atlantic shoreline daily. It's my yob.

I'm going to try this one out. If it's good, then Tides 1.2 gets deep-sixed, and Tide Tool gets the nod. Thanks for the lead.

Any tips for me, so that I don't have to "re-invent the wheel"?

This is a great piece of software. No tricks and very intuitive. Just load the application and database for the area you're interested in, and start tapping.
    Good luck.

Yup, I downloaded it immediately after finding out about Tide Tool. And guess what? Tides 1.2 got deep-sixed. Within about 1 hour of trying out Tide Tools, I realized what a neat piece of software this is. It's going to become a regularly used app, as often as DateBook, I think. I love it when there is software that actually provides some real task-related solutions. Thank you, Mr. Bilofsky. You will be paid as soon as I get my next paycheck (next week).
