Noob question - other than being an official release, what makes this better than the alternatives?

Edit: for bad typing when posting from treo

I believe this is one of the few (if not only) that allows for an IPSEC connection.

That leads you to purchase Certicom's VPN formerly known as "Movian VPN."
It is the ONLY IPSec VPN client availavle for the Treo.
Until recently you were unable to buy any IPSec VPN client to use with Cisco 3000 for example and your only option would have been to obtain a pirated copy of Movian.
Athena software started selling and supporting this to end users once again.
The other, MergicVPN is a PPTP type VPN client.

They key here is that it isn't a pirated version. You can't deploy an enterprise of Treos with IPSec ability using a pirated version without far reaching legal consequences. And to sleep well at night, you shouldn't be running a pirated copy of the client anyway.

What happened to the VPN cilent that was supposed to come with the Treo 650? Are they now saying you have to pay for it?

$80 bucks for an IPSec vpn client? I'll stick with Mergic, thanks. It was still over priced, but not -that- overpriced.

I don't recall PalmOne ever saying the Treo included a VPN client. I think it mentions a trial version which never materialized (was supposed to be Movian.)

Anyone know if there are advantages/differences between this version and the Movian 4.0 version?

I believe it is the identical version. A while back someone bought it and I asked him to check the version, it was 4.0.

The only difference is that the new one seems to know when it is disconnected whereas the other doesn't and you have to disoconnect/connect every now and again.

Did you purchase a version, or did you somehow aquire a trial. I tried to get a trial, but it only gives me the PowerPC version. If you managed to get a trial, what link did you use to get to it?

    Thanks,
