    Hi,

Today my computer crashed while updating some system settings. When I rebooted, everything else was fine, but the Palm Desktop and HotSync programs no longer run.

When I launch either of these, I get this dialogue box:

    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Program ... palm.exe
    Abnormal Program Termination
    [OK]

I uninstalled Palm Desktop, then reinstalled the program, but I get the same error. I'm running Windows ME (and have been quite smoothly for 1.5 weeks).

Any idea how to repair this, short of a ME reinstall?

    Thanks,

    Hello 3Com customer,

Thank you for contacting Palm Computing(R) Online Support.

I see that you are having difficulties with the Palm Desktop software.

I recommend that you completley uninstall and reinstall your Palm Desktop
software using the steps that I have provided below for your convenience.

    1. Click on START, PROGRAMS, WINDOWS EXPLORER and then PALM.

    2. Once you are in the Palm folder move your User folder and Users.dat to a
    temporary location..

    3. After you have moved these files to another location you are going to
need to Delete the PALM folder.

    4. After you have deleted the PALM folder close Windows Explorer.

    5. Click on START, and select RUN. Type "regedit". Go to REGISTRY, EXPORT
REGISTRY FILE. Type "backup.reg" and hit "save". This will backup your
    registry.

    6. Double-click the following to expand the directory tree:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    Software
    U.S.Robotics

If "U.S. Robotics" is listed under "Software", please delete the "U.S.
    Robotics" key.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    SOFTWARE
    U.S.Robotics

    and

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    SOFTWARE
    Palm Computing

If "U.S.Robotics" and/or "Palm Computing" is listed under "SOFTWARE", please
delete the "U.S. Robotics" and "Palm Computing" key. Close the registry.

    7. Once you have closed the registry please run the scandisk.exe and
defrag.exe utilities (or similar programs) to check your hard drive.

    8. Now you will need to reinstall the Palm Desktop software and place the
Users.dat and User folder back into the PALM folder and attempt to HotSync
    your PalmPilot.

If the problem continues, please contact us again for support.

Have we resolved your issue to your satisfaction today? If the response we
have provided you does not meet with your satisfaction, please reply to this
message with an explanation as to why.

Please post all replies under this message.

    Thank You,
    Ryan S.

Thanks, Joe! That worked perfectly. I'm up an running again. I thought it might be some kind of registry key somewhere, but I had no idea what. Thanks again!

I will be getting a new computer with Vista today and have been concerned about this issue, so I've done a lot of reading about it on the forums and on the Palm support site. Have you looked at this information from Palm: http://www.palm.com/us/support/windowsvista/index.html?

It seems that you should uninstall all previous versions of the Palm Desktop (don't worry, it's my understanding that uninstalling the Palm Desktop program will NOT delete your associated data from your PC) and reinstall Palm Desktop 6.2 beta from that link.

There's a Palm Install tool installed with that beta that replaces the Palm QuickInstall that's used with previous versions of Palm Desktop. I understand that enables you to do a USB cable hotsync of everything but VersaMail (although wireless VersaMail email sync isn't affected).

Just thought I'd give an update now that my new computer with Vista OS is hooked up, all of my data has been transferred, and all of my (what seems like thousands) of programs have been loaded and tested.

I downloaded Palm Desktop 6.2 from the link I posted above and it's working like a champ. My CallRec and DocstoGo conduits are running fine and I used the new Palm Install tool to install the latest TAKEphONE beta to my phone and it worked just like it's supposed to. I have to say that I was very nervous about switching to Vista, but it's going great so far.
