Well I've had my Cingular Treo for 6 weeks now and I love everything about it, BUT the fact it's a PHONE!

Extremely POOR ear speaker quality. And even using a Bluetooth device, it still will NOT get loud enough to hear when in the car.

And let's talk about the ROTTEN phone reception. I dropped Nextel to go to Cingular because they marekt "more" bars. But after 6 weeks with the Treo, I should have kept the Nextel!

I bought a cheaper version phone for the wife and her phone is "ok". But my $450 phone is an absolutle POS!

I use this phone to contact and have clients contact me and more than half the time I "can't understand them or they me"! The Treo is a joke for a phone!

I've did searches on phone amplifiers for house or car.

Could someone please give me a good reason to keep my Treo which I love for the email and web search, but is a rotten phone?

I hope you are prepared for responses to what you are asking.

If you didnt like the phone, why dont you return it?

Since this is your second post, can I assume you didnt do a search to see that there are plenty of threads about BT volume issues, ringer issues, reception issues, etc?

If you have found this forum, then there is an expectation that you will do a search before you post. I like the 650 but I understand it has some issues. For a LOT of people here, those issues are outweighed by its benefits. Good Luck to you.

I suggest you wait for the impending firmware update, or try the leaked 1.23 update that many of us have applied. I found that it improved the volume levels dramatically. Can't say that it will help with reception, though - if you're in a bad area for Cingular coverage, you're plain SOL.

If you need a good phone, and the Treo on Cingular isn't working out, you should clearly return the phone and move back to Nextel. Seems a pretty clear solution...

Honestly I would say the Treo is not for everyone. If you don't want to spend the time to apply alot of after market fix, to get the feature of a cheaper cell phone, then I would suggest droping the Treo.

I'm a computer geek so I will keep mine, but other might find better service and realiability in a regular cell phone, and a Seperate Palm for pda features.

This forum is call Treo central, and people here don't tolerate complaint about there favorite phone.

Honestly, you will get better, service and phone quality from a "PHONE", not a pda/phone combo.

I wouldnt say that...its more that they dont want to keep hearing the same complaints by people who wont research the issues and apply the recommended fixes.

I think there is tolerance (buts its veiled in sarcasm)

Ummm, ehhh, here is one reason: you've had it for six weeks and are past the return period, so you are stuck with it?

Did you do the Cingular 1.14 firmware update? I didn't do the newer ones because nothing has been authorized by Palm support(nothing on their site about those updates), but the 1.14 update is authorized and works fine. Volume is fine. For reception, look on Cingular's site for their coverage map and see if your area is really covered well. Usually only major metro areas are covered fully by GSM.
HP has officially ruined it's own platform and kicked webOS loyalists and early TouchPad adopters to the curb. You think after you drop it like a hot potato and mention it made no money and is costing you money, anyone else wants it??? Way to go HP!!

And some people are fools to keep believing their hype. HP has shown they will throw webOS under the bus and people are still having faith in them??? News flash: if it's own company won't stand behind it, it's finished!

Ha! It's funny how people here jump on someone who complains...

Some of its right though. If it is really that bad, get rid of it and get something else. I Still have my Treo and really like it, but I am getting more life from an i-mate Jam that I recently bought. The fact is that there are tradeoffs with each device. I like the tradeoffs with the Jam more than the Treo right now...maybe something else might work better for you.

In this gentleman's defense, Nextel really isn't that good. I get static on Boost Mobile(Nextel's pre-paid). Although I can hear, it's mediocre, I'd say. Cingular is louder and clearer, at least around here.

I have NOT done any firmware updates.

I am NOT a total "tech" or a "geek" as some may say.

I AM your TYPICAL salesman who is on the road most of the day and out of the office. So I need to check emails and my company website.

I choose THIS phone OVER the Blackberry for several reasons. I WANT to KEEP it fo rseveral reason and I"m willing to "work with it".

PLease understand for all those who "eat and sleep" this forum. Many do NOT. The manual is remedial for many fixes. I have went to a "few" website (ie. Palmwarez, Shadowmite,etc...) But THESE are

NOT written for the AVERAGE guy to understand within reason or remotely "remedial
    ".

I don't live and breathe the Treo. I simply want solid coverage with a "good" phone. AND

    AND
AND The PDA capabilities that were marketed to me.

And I love it for everything...but a phone at this point. Dropped calls, poor reception. I only wish or "knew" of a way to get beeter reception.

    Period.

And POST do NOT equal SEARCHES.

Posts are post. I don't or shouldn't have to "pad" my numbers to get respect.

Fair enough...so you did search? I didnt actually see you state in your post that you searched on these various issues.

Geez louise man, calm down. Take it easy. I read you.

Here, let me point you in one direction, forget about the search function for now.

    Check this thread out:

Newbie Cingular Treo 650 FAQ - READ ME FIRST

I made it for Cingular users but works for any carrier. It gives you some ideas and suggestions on how to proceed.

    Also, check this thread out:

    Treo 650 Troubleshooting 101

Now, if you have an extra SD card (bigger than 32MB) and an SD card reader, and you feel up to it, give the 1.23 beta firmware a try. It fixes a LOT of issues. You can wait a couple of weeks for the official release, or you can check out this thread:

Guinea pig for 1.23 so far so good

which has a step by step instruction on how to do the upgrade, and you can get the update by downloading it from a link somewhere in this thread

    Spaces required for upload

And if you excuse me I have to get a napkin to wipe my keyboard off as I spilled some pizza sauce I was eating while typing this. I guess between this and the next post I will also squeeze in a nap.

    h2osho,

You are absolutely correct about the 650 being a great pda and poor phone.

I too made that observation long ago, and was met with derision, redicule, and general disdain (as you yourself have experienced.)
I was even banned for daring to criticize anything related to the Treo, even though I like the device.

I solved it by having two "phones": the 650, and a "real" phone that does the phone functions. And it work very well.

You will be much happier this way.

That I'm not arguing. Never had either service, but those lips will always win any arguement with me.

My point is a bit more diligence should be used, other than a slogan. I mean does anyone say "We Have Less Coverage!"?

I am (was) in you EXACT situation. I had Nextel (sucks) and went to cingular and bought a motorola mpx220. You want to talk about a piece of S**t phone. I had just changed companies and put up with it because I didn't have time to mess with it until after 30 days.
I went and bought (at full price) a Treo 650 and could NOT be happier. Like you, I am on the road ALL day long and need to send and recieve email and such. If you will buy Snappermail you will be very happy.
I will admit the volume WAS an issue but not NEAR as bad as the sh***y mpx220 I had, but I applied the 1.23 firmware and it's all good. If I can do it - trust me anyone can. I can walk you through it if you need me to.

    Good Luck!!

Slick advertising does work, LOL! Had I not already used T-Mobile(yeah I go through them all, LOL!), I might have been swayed by their roll-over minutes. They were the first BEFORE Cingular & Sprint to offer this. But they aren't so great coverage-wise, you have to stay in big metro areas only for them. Thank goodness I knew this BEFORE, or I might have signed a contract.

I don't know that I could ever recommend someone use a separate phone and PDA after having a Treo.

Stop applying "after market" fixes and you should have a pretty stable phone.
