PowerUp is only shareware if you use it for more than powering up the phone. As the author puts it (caps not mine):

YOU ONLY NEED TO PAY FOR THIS PROGRAM IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE THE APPLIOCATION LAUNCH FEATURE. DONATIONS ARE HOWEVER ACCEPTED.

    i just added:
chit chat lite-(for msn messenger-it is a little buggy, but basic and free)

Can someone please post which version of AIM is free and doesn't reset the treo?

Also, I don't know why no one has mentioned it but I get about a 75% failure rate when trying to access information with DA. I've had to stop using it.

    I have no problems w/DA.

Here is a link to the file http://ftp.newaol.com/aim-uk/palm/aolaim.prc

I think that is the version that works (its sporadic for me so to each his own. )

DA used to act wierd for me, then I grabbed the newer version. It works find now so maybe you should give it a try.

I no longer use AIM for anything, but IIRC that version does not work on the 650.

(g-funkster doesn't say what he has, but assuming we're in the 650 forum...)

    Freeware is just that. Free.

Shareware usually has some kind of limitation. 30-day trial before it stops working, a nag screen, maybe some options deactivated...so you pay money to get the full working copy. This way to can evaluate it, and see if it may be of worth to you.

    Some shareware have no limitations.

The most used but least registered shareware comes to mind: pkzip

Which is why I said "usually" has limitations. Anyways, way back in the DOS days, PKWare offered a free version of pkzip, and a pay version. The paid version had a few more options, (plus no "Why you should register messages" but it's been over ten years now, so I can't remember the differences...

Some people "especially Developers" Hate Freeware, and the idea of Open Source.

You can never win a arguement with them when it comes to this issue.

Alot of Dev put out free, to Advertise there Pay Ware. They get alot more publicity then regular advertisment, because people spead the name by word of Mouth "like this forum".

But the free version they put out or just that Free "ads".

No for all the haters out there, this Thread is talking about Free Programs, NOT Hacked Wares. So chill the H**l Out.

I have been searching and download, all the freeware posted, and uploaded them all to my Server.

    Download most of them here

    http://palm.middleton.no-ip.org/ebooks/palm/freeware

for all the haters, Go there, and Email me with all the Shareware so I can remove them

I gave up PK in favor of Explorer Plus.....still a free downlaod for a limited version from the V-Com site. Explorer Plus is oft described as "what Window Explorer should have been" and return sus to the two pane window we had back in the days of File Manager....and yes, it has built in zipping / unzipping. I use the full featured paid for version but the free one does most of what the majority of people ask for.

You're still missing freeware that's been mentioned in this thread.

I will not download, the freeware that require you register for Mytreo.net, or any of the other Palm Software Site.

If anyone have the direct link to either the developers site, or the zip file it's self I will download them, But for know I only have.

None of the programs that I mentioned require registration with any site to download. You might want to check it out. Of course, there's always this: http://www.freewarepalm.com/
