What is a "hack"? Someone beamed me a program "HackMaster" but they negleted to inform me what I could use it for. I'm thinking its probably worth deleting. Thoughts?

HackMaster itself isn't a hack... but it is needed to use them. Basically, hack's extend the functionality of the OS. Sort of like the old days of DOS with its TSR's. They typically add or enhance a function not directly supported by the OS.

HackMaster is a shareware application ($5) that allows you to add functionality to the Palm operating system. The additions are called Hacks, and there are many of them (PalmGear lists 218!). For example, there is a Hack, FindHack, that goes beyond Palm's "Find" utility by allowing you to search for strings with wild cards at the beginning or in the middle of the string. For a list of available Hacks, try: http://www.palmgear.com/software/ans...goryIDs=114%2C

Hackmaster is perhaps the single most powerful app for the Palm OS. (OK, that may be a bit of hyperbole, but it IS powerful and useful!) It allows for 'hacks' to be written that overcome deficiencies in the Palm OS. See this link for Hack examples: http://www.palmgear.com/software/ans...goryIDs=114%2C

    My favorites are:

Menu Hack--Windoze-like menu functionality (tap the menu area of the screen in the upper-left)

MiddleCaps Hack--capitilize by writting on the border btwn text and number entry areas

    Afterburner--overclock utility

    MagicText Hack--text power!--double tap selects, drag-and-drop, etc.

PhlegmHack--returns to last program with a single stroke, and "pops-up" a list of favorite apps

ChronoHack--check the time in any app with a single stroke

FindHack--replaces find button with much more power

    PopMe!--"pops-up" BugMe!

And there are MANY other useful ones that a) I don't yet know about, or b) don't suit my needs.

I appreciate it. Hope all are a bit patient with me when I post a few more questions later. I just got my Handspring last week and it has been a great tool!

Hey, no problem... we were all newbies once, too!

Don't forget the forum search feature. Just click the search icon (above, with the picture of the globe and magnifying glass), enter a keyword or phrase, and chances are you'll find the answer. Also, if you haven't already, check out the VisorCentral FAQ's... lot's of useful information there as well.
