I have a 256 MB Panasonic SD card that actually has 243.7 MB of space. Logically, a 512 MB Panasonic SD card should have about 487 MB of space, right? Well, the one I just purchased has 472.2 MB.

    Is that to be expected?

It all depends on how space is calculated, and whether there are some files in your card already. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I just checked my wife's Sandisk Ultra II card, and the total space available is 483.5. Technically, its supposed to be 488MB (512 million divided by 1024*1024), since Sandisk uses 1,000,000=1MB, which is not technically true. Some space is used up by the file system (FAT) so that reduces the 488 a bit. Your 472 does seem a little bit low. You could try reformatting the card to see if that helps.
