Bluejacking is benign. You can really do no harm and is easily preventable. Bluesnarfing is another story, certain phones do not implement bluetooth well and do not require passkeys or require that devices be trusted, these devices can be hacked. You can download contacts, make phone calls, send messages, etc. The Treo 650 is fairly immune to this, and would take active participation of the owner.

This is not benign. Transferring anything to another's phone is not only an invasion of privacy, it is also an opportunity to transfer more malicious files. And the worst part is saying "it's easily preventable" as if you are doing the victims a service by showing them the vulnerability. You don't have the right to interfere with their phones in the first place. Grow up folks.

Security is in your hand's, learn to use it or suffer the consequences...not everybody plays by the rules and many basic phones come with Bluetooth..many of which are owned by children and they would have alot of fun sending you crap...it's not worth complaining people shouldnt do this or that instead turn off discovery on the Treo and there is nothing to complain about because it won't happen to you.

When you buy a computer and get a virus do you really think the virus creator cares whether it is ethical or an invasion of privacy when he sent a virus to you? Instead do something to protect yourself and your info just as you would protect your computer, if you don't.... you have nobody to blame but yourself and will suffer until you wise up to the real world and realize that there is no more Mr. Nice Guy and if people can take advantage of you they will.

    1. Lack of security is not justification for intrusion.
    2. Lack of security is not a good idea

You are completely missing my point. Treocentral is a legitimate website, not a hackers convention, and to condone, or even justify, this sophomoric prank of bluejacking just flies in the face of legitimate users. Why not open up a warez thread and let's steal every developers software while we're at it.

I'm not a Pollyanna - and you are 100% right that we need to protect ourselves; but for heavens sake why laud the success of a bluejacker.

How long before porn companies "just send a picture" too? The word "jacked" is used for a reason and its never a good thing. Its just plain wrong.

I'm sure the first spammer said "I'm just sending this e-mail to someone I don't know as a little harmless joke" .

And remember, stupid politicians make stupid laws because stupid citizens request it .

Personally I think current breaking and entering laws already cover this. If you knowingly invade someone else's device to me its the same thing as entering anything else. No new law needed, the same old laws already apply IMHO.

Bluejacking Frequently Asked Questions :: FAQ
How do I stop people from bluejacking me?
You can either go into your Bluetooth menu and switch it off, or if you need Bluetooth on for one reason or another you can simply set your phone to 'Undiscoverable' in your Bluetooth menu. This means that other Bluetooth devices won't find you when they search for Bluetooth devices.

Just to take this thread off on a complete tangent...

The first commercial spam occurred not via email, but on Usenet, almost exactly 11 years ago. On April 13, 1994, Canter & Siegel, a Phoenix immigration attorney partnership, posted an advertisement for their "Green Card Lottery" service across several thousand Usenet newsgroups. An archived copy of the offending item can be seem at http://www.mailmsg.com/SPAM_history_001.htm. If you're interested, it's the subject of many articles around the 'net including this one in Wired - a Google search for "green card lottery" spam will find 'em.

(I was using the internet back then, and I remember the incident firsthand. Of course, there was no name for it at that time - "spam" came along much later.)

I am just curious. Why would you want to scare someone for a laugh? The guy with the nokia may have been really upset after the bluejacking, and the incident may have have ruined his night out. I don't think I would be to happy if it happened to me. How about you?

Maybe its not always about scaring someone. You can also send a nice or fun message. I like to try and send fortunes to my friends, or something that will get them to laugh or smile

Easy Cowboy...first of all I don't condone or justify people doing this and instead suggest people protect themselves...where did I "laud the success of a bluejacker"?

Plain and simple protect yourself or it is likely to happen to you sooner than later, I don't at all encourage people to do it and simply stated people protect themselve's.

Whats so hard about people turning off discovery on their Treos, I think you must realize if you do this then people *cannot* see your device and send you anything...problem solved!

I agree bluejacking you friends must be fun, if they know it is coming from you.

Clownracer, don't take this forum to personal. It is a thread such as this, that shows how diverse Treocentral members views are, and makes for great discussions. You may not agree with all of the posts above but don't curse this wonderful forum for being what it actually is..... a medium to share opinions openly and intelligently.

I'll step off the soapbox for now.......
