Received my first bill yesterday - WOW 135.00 in data charges, glad it comes via email and wife wont see it.

Called Cingular Customer Service to talk about the best plan. It was like talking to a pile of rocks - so, what plan does the cingular crowd recommend?

Just suck it up and get the unlimited data plan for $39.99, you need to have this option if you are going to be able to access isp.cingular for your internet access. If you go through the wap.cingular proxy they block certain ports. Specifically VPN access, which sucks. I found this out the hard way. Look at it this way, $39.99 + $10 for a 1000 text messages, is only like 20 something more then the media works package.

whats the difference between that and media net unlimited for 24.00?
  6. #6
Simple answer? No VPN access if you have media net as opposed to the unlimited data plan. if you don't need to create a VPN connection for email or other purposes, save the money and get the media net plan. you won't notice a difference.

Yes, please, can we have a few more TROLLS respond about various other companies data packages when the topic is obviously Cingular??

If the poster wasn't under contract (which we don't know), then what would be the harm of recommending another provider with better plans? Obviously the phone isn't compatible, but a few more bills like that will easily pay for a new Sprint Treo.

When I signed up I chose the Media Works package (3MB Data, 1000 Text Messages, Unlimited MMS.) for $19.99. I've already gone over by 4MB, which is going to cost me about $40. I called them yesterday, and got 2 very helpful customer service reps. As of my next billing cycle, I'll be on the unlimted data plan for $24.99, and I got the 200 text message plan for $4.99. That's $5 more than I was paying w/ T-Mobile, just FYI. The couldn't switch me over mid month, w/o pro-rating my Media Works package, which would have cost me more in overage charges, so I'm laying low on data useage for a few weeks.

I was lucky b/c I got on the $19.99 MediaWorks package when it was still unlimited data.

My experience with the Cingular customer service was great though. I signed up through a 3rd party and they totally messed up my account. So I have spent alot of time on the phone with Cingular Customer service since I got the account created. They have all been very helpful and extremely friendly. I was impressed.

I also was slammed with tons of data overages, so I moved to the MediaNet Unlimited... the customer service rep told me twice (because I asked twice) that the unlimited data plan would go into effect immediately. I hope she was right... I have been racking up the MB's in data since she "turned it on".

The $24.99 Unlimited Medianet package is strictly unlimited internet access only. It doesn't include SMS or MMS and you'll still get charged the flat rate of .05 and .25, respectively.

I just called cingular customer service again, and was assured that switching data plans would cause the old plan to be pro-rated for the new plan to take effect, so I'll be laying low on data until 4/11.

Are there any limitations to the MediaNet package, vs. the 39.99 pda internet plan? I want full access to all web sites at EDGE speeds but 40/mo seems a bit steep.

Actually, it's not that they block ports, it's that the $40 PDA plan gives you an externally addressable IP address, while the $25 MediaNet plan gives you a NATted address. As observed, this breaks some VPN software, but if your VPN uses IPSEC it should work fine. I have no problem doing everything I need, VPN included, on the $24.99 MediaNet Unlimited plan. Note that, as already mentioned, it does not include any SMS or MMS messages.

So, if I stayed under my 500K limit before the day I switch over to the unlimited, I should be OK??
I am at 7MB so far this month!

How can they prorate an unlimited KB usage plan?
