I am currently looking into purchasing a Treo 650 to use with my existing Cingular account, and I am hoping everyone can provide some useful and informative tips. First off, I am wondering if i should wait a couple of months more before I buy one so that there will be firmware updates, as I have read that some people have had to exchange theirs out a couple of times or more because there were issues with the 650.

Also I intend to use the phone not only for data organization (tracking expsenses, contacts etc.) but for email and communication. (primarily via instant messaging. Are there any programs out there that you reccomend for instant messaging and if so what your experience has been with them. One thing i need clarification on is whether these programs are just the one time lisence fee and then usage is billed to your cell phone at the carrier rate. does transfer fall under text message or data?

Any financial managing software that you suggest would be helpful as well. Again, which programs have you had the best experience with.

Lastly (for now at least) Memory management. I have heard avid treo users found that the internal memory on the 650 to be a bit sparse. Is there a way to configure the memory to run off the exspansion card? ISsthis a tricky alternative and does it degrade performance in any way?

Thank you in advanced. Hope you guys and gals have some helpful info!

I haven't done instant messaging on my T650 because I wouldn't want to type that much. It isn't bad for typing, but it would get tedious after a while.

Verichat for IM. Verichat charges you an annual subscription price of around $25 a year. If you get the unlimited data plan for $25, there is no additional data access charge.

The many treo problems reported here are overblown. I have two in my household, and we are very happy and satisfied Treo customers. Treos are not prefect, nothing is in this world.

All your other questions have been address many times on this forum. Please use the search function to find all your answers. Make you set the search date back a few months, not just yesterday

And, btw, p1 just released an updated ROM for the Cingular/ATTWS branded ones...

Don't wait - get it, now. This is my first smartphone (I wasn't sold on the whole smartphone thing when they first came out) and it really is an amazing phone.

I use Zlauncher to move and launch my third party applications off an SD card. Works great. Honestly I have enough programs that even if the Treo had more memory I would still use Zlauncher. The programs get copied into RAM when you use them and back to the card when you are done. It only takes a couple of seconds (a bit longer for huge apps like Vindigo).

    1. Don't wait. Use the manual and don't be tempted to install everything on the 1st day. That's why they have it divided up into 1st day, 1st week , etc....to slow you down <g>.

    2. Get Northglide's NeatFreakPak and make that your 1st install.

    3. Install one program at a time ....install hot syn / install hotsyc. Ths make sit easier for Uninstall Manage rto track what goes with what.

    4. As fo IM, I can't help you. I'd rather stick needles in my eyes than be at everyone's beck and call

    5. Finanaila Management should be coordinated with what you use on PC. I had lQuicken Expense on PalmVx which interfaced with QuickBooksPro but I have replaced it with paperclips.....yup, I use a paperclip to hold receipts until I give my expenses to my bookkeeper and she enters them in on PC.

    6. Personally, I like PowerRun to manage memory. Zlaunchers and others do the same job but add a bunch of fluff.

Before your Treo arrives recommend a friend (yourself) for a Treo 650 and get a bunch of Palm bucks. Registering gets you more.

When your Treo arrives make sure to do the ROM upgrade first (if its not already done) so that you don't have hassles later. See PalmOne update page for version details.

Pick a headset....this one is designed specifically for Treo

And this free 128 MB SD card

This is the VoiceDialer app that ya get a 15 day trial with......I bought it after 2 hours right from the Treo

While you are waiting, ya might wanna look at these:
