When I try to sync my 650 using the cable, I get this message - "USB device not recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned..." It happened only once in a while before but now it happens all the time. I sent an e-mail to Palm and they told me to contact Sprint. Sprint has no idea and told me to uninstall the drivers and software (I already tried to uninstall the drivers and it didn't fix it). Will uninstalling and reinstalling the software going to fix this? Any other fixes?

Went through the same thing yesterday. Had to uninstall and reinstall several times to fix it. Even trashed the USB and rebuilt it. Keep the dream alive.

this is a known issue, you can disconnect/reconnect the cable from the 650 and keep trying. I am hoping the cradle will take care of this issue

Amazing, so no fix for this? This is a huge issue. I have disconnected and reconnected the cable about ten times and it's not synching. I also tried the other 6 USB ports on my computer and still nothing. This is driving me nuts and knowing there is no available fix is making me even more nuts. How long has the 650 been on the market??? Is this an isolated incident (i.e only a small amount of people are suffering from this)?

I had it this morning... reseating the connector seemed to fix it for me.

Are you using the standard USB/Charging cable or just a USB one. I get it a lot on the plain USB one but not the regular one so much. The connector just does not seem to sit tight and any movement seems to undo it. The only fix I can seem to get is a reboot of the PC.

I have the GSM version, happens once in a blue moon, just re-attaching it seems to fix it fine...

Does anyone know if it's the contacts on the cable or the contacts on the phone that are defective? I finally got it to work but I had to constantly put pressure on the cable as it performed the sync, otherwise it would lose the connection.

try to disable power management for the USB port.

Happened to me several times. Made me crazy. But I tried unpluggin and plugging it back in again and that worked for a while. Each time I unplugged it, rebooted the computer, plugged it back in and then it would work. Oh what fun!

Just curious...is anyone using Card Export? I never had this issue until I used Softick card export. Sometimes it even affects my Bluetooth hotsyncs.

card export works fine for me. i don't see how it would affect your bluetooth connections. if anything it would be the softick blue files (card export via bluetooth.)

Well it seems nobody really knows what the problem is.

Doing one of these things has fixed it for at least one person -

    - reinstall the software
    - restart the computer
    - wiggle the USB cable or put pressure at connector (worked for me a couple times). -- try a different cable
    - disable power mgmt for usb
    - soft or hard reset
    - just keeping pressing the button until it finally syncs

I called Palm and they said there is no known issue (figures)
I called Sprint and they said there is no known issue (figures)

Just tried syncing and putting pressure at the connector did NOT work this time. Joy.

It certainly seems to be a physical connection issue. I get this every now and then, and everything "soft" doesn't seem to work (even rebooting Windows). For me, it is the connector on the cord or (most often) the leads on the Treo itself. Either cleaning off the leads or mucking around with the metal doohickeys on the cord seems to clear things up. Definitely a poor connector design. It looks to me like they hired an engineer from SonyEricsson (equally crappy connectors).

This is caused by lousy connection between the Treo and the USB port. The connector on the USB sync cable is not tight enough and needs to be unplugged and plugged in again. I first encountered the same problem with my old Sony Clie N610c whose cradle would give me the same error until I re-seat the Clie several times to ensure a secure connection. It was annoying and but only happened to me a couple of time since I got the Treo 650. Everytime reconnecting the cable worked for me.

This is definitely a contacts problem. It plagued me about 1/3 of the time before I got my cradle--no problems since I began using the cradle. That plus the convenience makes the cradle worth the bucks to me.

Had the same problem, not mine but a collegue's. As soon the problem occurs, I disconnect the Palm supplied USB cable, and do a soft reset on the Treo 650. I then connect and do a sync. Works fine after that.
