Hello first of all let me say I just bought my first Treo 650 and do love it. I was debating between the SE s710a and the 650. I had the s710a for a week or so and liked it and thought it was cool It's just that the Treo offers so much more for the money. Anyway my big concerns with getting the 650 were size, screen and antenna. I do not like antenna's, they get broken off. but the 650 antenna is not bad it's nubby so hopefully it'll survive. The size is not bad but the weight is quite substantial. It's a mini brick. Anyway my only and last concern is the screen. I'm afraid i'll put it in the pocket with my keys or something like that and it'll scratch or even break easy. Does anyone here have any horror or surprise stories about how their treo screens survived or didn't and/or any recomendations on screen/case protectors. I'm thinking about getting the skin one but it still doesn't protect the screen The metals ones' usually have an annoying flap/door you gotta keep swinging open to use.

After breaking the treo 600's screen by dropping the thing down stairs I went with the innopocket case for excellent protection. I fell off my bicycle onto the case and hurt my hip, but not the phone.

My father sat on the 600 accidentally and now there is a spot on the display. Be careful!

I absolutely would not expect the screen to survive without scratches after being in a pocket with keys.

At a minimum, if you go caseless, you need to have a screen protector on it.

I use the Innopocket aluminum case myself. Very sturdy with excellent protection. The hinge design leaves a bit to be desired, but that's my only real issue.

Think of the screen as a hummingbird egg. Don't do anything with it you wouldn't do to that egg. This includes carrying it in your pocket with keys.

Horror story: At a party, heading to the bathroom, my pocket clips a dresser. Smash- bye bye screen.

My preventions: Use a Flexiskin case: Small, light, doubles as an Egrip and protects everything but the screen. Then get a Boxwave Crystal Screen protector- its the best one. Designate one pocket for your Treo only. I've lasted months with this and I'm a klutz.

Definitely get screen protection at a minimum. Boxwave makes very good protectors. I highly recommend them. As for dropping your Treo, get a decent padded case. I'm not a case guy, so I go for the holster idea. The Treo is a bit slippery, so I'm consdering getting those rubberized skins to make it easier to grip. I get worried everytime I take it out of the holster when I'm outside.

Krussel (available from this site) makes a leather cover for the 650 that has clear plastic covering the entire front of the unit. The case itself has an extremely low profile and fits pretty much like skin. The plastic will definitely protect the screen from scratches from semi-sharp objects and the unit should survive a fall that is not too traumatic (I have NOT tested this). There is another thread somewhere here that talks about the slim design of this case.

I agree with Zorro- this is a precious item! Accidents will happen but try to prevent them to begin with.

Yeah, if you're going to go caseless you definately need a Boxwave screen protector. They are amazing. If you want ultimate protection, that Innopocket cases look like a good deal. You could also choose from the wide array of leather cases for the 650, or, for minimum protection, get EGrips or a skin.

Vaja T65 and a Boxwave clear screen protector work very nicely

but anybody using no screen protector: has anybody observed a damaged screen over time due to stylus and finger using?

I mean, the screen is much more sensitive without any of those protectors, as fine as they may be.

Has anybody tried the screen protector that TreoCentral sells?

Yes, it's exactly like the Boxwave. I first bought a Boxwave back when I had a 600, but then when I next bought a screen protector, I got it from Treocentral. It is indistinguishable from the Boxwave, so I recommend it for the lower price.

I feel pretty safe with the thick screen protector, so I put mine in my pocket with the screen facing my leg. I never put anything else in that pocket, no keys, nothing. My 600 never got scratched, nor has my 650 yet.

Yes, you can damage a display by not using a screen protector. Some dust particles as hard as rock, and nearly invisible. Rub with a stylus or your finger and they will sandpaper the display. Eventually these scratches will show up.
