Lately, there has been a lot of interest in the guide that I wrote a few months back. I have been getting some emails and a few visitors in the chatroom asking about it. Because of this I decided to update my guide!

The URL to it is: http://tek.8m.net/
The old guide can still be found at: http://tek.8m.net/mmplayer_DVD_copying.htm

Now, I believe that the guide is still rough around the edges, so if you use it and find something unclear, or would like to see something added please send me a pm with the info. Also, the deciding factor for the bit rate used was from other posts on these forums. If you find that they are not optimal, please tell me your thoughts on the matter.

I did a pretty decent overhaul of the guide. Instead of using DivX the guide uses a 2-pass XviD codec. Prasys was awesome and compiled and is hosting the files for the new 1.10 beta version. I have it linked on my page.

Also, I got rid of using flask, I now use vstrip to combine the vob files from the DVD and then import the large vob file into virtualdubmod. This cuts back on the middle work considerably.

The results from the movie I did are:
    bitrate: 255
    dimensions: 320x240
    fps: 24
    size: ~270MB

    Tek,

Looks like your link to vStrip won't work unless you go to www.doom9.org first...

Alright, I changed the vstrip link to go to the general software download page on doom9, wish they organized there site better; but I think this'll be okay.

& I highly recommend using xvid codecs & 2 pass with "pocket divx encoder"... & then running the file through its a/v synch util... works awesome & simpler.

Tek, with vStrip, trying to use it for The Matrix and every time it bombs out around 74% saying "vStrip could not write to output (disk full?) [@LBA 2166214].

I still have over 7gb left on my hard drive so I know it can't be because the disk is full..maybe I'll try another DVD...ever seen this?

    - Edit: Worked ok on another DVD (The Usual Suspects).

    One note in your instructions:

When setting the Xvid settings for the first pass, you have a couple sentences backwards

"Now to select the compression, in the menu, select “Video -> Compression.” Next to “profile @ Level” make sure “AS @ L5” is selected. In the compression window select ”XviD MPEG-4 codec” and hit the “Configure” button. Select the dropdown box next to “Encoding type” and select “Twopass – 1st pass”. Click “OK” and then click “Ok” in the “select video compression” window.

    It should be:

Thanks scotty! I clean up those sentances.

I haven't ever seen that error come up when the disk isn't full. hrm, are there a lot of vab files for the matrix? I may have to try and rip my own copy and see if I can't duplicate that error.

Is anyone else having the problem I am having?

Basically..I follow the instructions EXACTLY. Problem is...I hear no audio on the final final when I try to play the file on my PC (using WMP) or on the phone using MMplayer. The video is there and looks great, but no audio.

I did notice that when I open up the final file using WMP on my PC, it says "error downloading codec" right before it starts playing (playing the video..without audio).

Also..whenever I am in Vdub, I am never asked which language I want my audio to be in (like Tek says I should).

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks

Agreed, the ease of use cannot be denied. I have been using Pocket Divx Encoder for 3 months now. Rocks and it's free (which rocks even more!).

Hey guys, Iave been trying to duplicate the problem, but I can't seem to. Does this happen with everything you try to convert or only some of the materials? If it's only some things, is there something that they all have in common?

Everytime I try to convert it happens. It makes it seem like WMP is not capable of reading some audio codec embedded in the final final (I'm not sure what it is).

And the files played on the phone have no sound as well.

"The codec you are missing is not available for download from this site. You might be able to find it on another site by searching the Web for "2000" (this is the WaveFormat or FourCC identifier of the codec)."

With a little google help, I found this link related to what I just posted and now the audio works on my computer!

    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ohdoom/...g2000audio.exe

Now the question is...how do I get this onto my treo 650? Should I just surf to the link in blazer?

I've extracted the XViD codec but when I right click on the .inf file I don't see the option to install. What am I missing?

    Thanks.
