It seems I missed lots of messages here, but I'll try to comment on them all now

Thanks for all your suggestions, Scott! You mentioned plug-ins - in fact there is a way to use "plug-ins" with Hi-Launcher - this can be done using DA's (Desk Accessories). And most probably there already exists a weather DA...

    (1) I'm trying to set up some menu items to send email. H-L wants to default to VersaMail, even though I have ChatterEmail set as the default mail app (in the Treo Preferences>Default Applications). Every other application that lets me send a message defaults to Chatter. Why does H-L want to use VersaMail?

    (2) Is there any way to set the color of a selected menu item? Some of mine use a black background, others purple, etc. Seems random.

    Thanks!
    Question #1
Unfortunately there are two default mail app settings: one default for Palm OS and one default for Treo. Hi-Launcher uses the former. I'm wondering why the Treo's setting does not have influence on the Palm OS setting... BTW. you normally set the Palm OS setting from within an application that you wish to accept given schemes by default.

    Question #2
In fact this is not a random color - it's what the system invert function does I know - it gives strange results sometimes... It's not possible to use a user-defined color at the moment.

So do you have a suggestion on how I might try to get Hi-Launcher to accept ChatterEmail? Are you saying that I would normally set this within the accepting application? That would be Hi-Launcher, correct? But there is no setting in Hi-Launcher (as there is, for example, in takePhone, which *does* let me send an email by selecting a contact and then handing off to ChatterEmail).

    Thanks.

We're aware of this issue, however I can't promise any exact date of fixing it at the moment.

No. By saying the accepting application I meant ChatterEmail.

What Hi-Launcher does is simply ask the system to process the URL you give it. So if the system gets an URL starting with "mailto:" it launches the application which has earlier registered itself for accepting the "mailto:" scheme/protocol.

Does anyone else here use HiLauncher in ROM?
    Obviously using a custon ROM.

If so, do you have the problem of not being able to change HL's menu or preferences?

If you're moving Hi-Launcher to ROM, then please make sure that only the "Hi-Launcher" database is located in ROM. The remaining two databases ("Hi-Launcher DB" and "Hi-Launcher SWP") must not be located in ROM.

    Thanks for the response.
    It solved my problem!

    Great!
FYI: Probably after you create your Menu, you may move these databases to ROM. You'll save some space in RAM, but won't be able to modify the Menu again.

FYI: Within the past couple of weeks, Marc introduced a mailto feature within the Chatter beta. I think it's version 1.5. It works perfectly with QuickNews' mail-it feature, so perhaps it will also kick in properly for HiLauncher. I've had the beta loaded for a week and a half now-- no problems.

    "Email via" Chatter

I use Chatter and have the latest beta. You're right, it works perfectly with Quick News. Still, though, when I try to use Hi-Launcher to send a message with a "mailto" menu item, all I get is a reset.

I give up on this. Other programs work fine with Mailto and Chatter. Hi-Launcher doesn't, so I assume this is a Hi-Launcher problem. But I don't critically need the feature to work. I still find Hi-Launcher an incredibly useful utility.

How do you go about setting up a "mail to" in the HL menus?
  18. #58
There's an app by Electric Pocket, TapDial, which allows you to create an icon(prc) for each contact desired. It auto-creates a category within Applications, where those icons live. One tap, and its dials.
    . . . . .http://www.electricpocket.com/products/tapdial.html
(It's apparently been replaced by PhotoDial for the 650, but I still use just the plain tapDial on my 650 (Cingular 1.17).

I mention that here, as I'm wondering if an app along those lines could be fashioned for emailing, allowing one to choose the actual email app used. It's incredibly handy to have a TapDial submenu within HiLauncher, and I'm greedy-- would love to be able to do the same with email.... I envision it working something like this--

-- EMail submenu >>> list of frequent contact email addys
    -- pick one
-- system flips you to the email app you designated within a prefs screen
-- To field is prepopulated with the desired recipient's email addy
-- cursor auto-lands in Subject field

    Start composing!

Perhaps something like this could be added to HiLauncher???

Use the "URL" item type. For example type "mailto:a@b.c" in the "URL" field (instead of "http://").
