On my Palm, there is no difference between a "soft" reset and a "system" reset, i.e. when I put a paper clip into the little hole WITHOUT pressing the up arrow on the navigator, I still get a system reset!

I've also stopped hearing the rising and descending tones that accompany the turning on and off of the phone.

Has anyone else seen this? Or do I have a defective unit?

you mean just press the reset button without pressing the red phone button and it still prompt you for the up and down arrow?

You're thinking of a "hard" reset, which erases everything on the device. I mean that when I put the paper clip in the hole in the battery compartment, the Palm displays the colored PalmOne log, and then puts up the gray Palm logo.

That's a normal soft reset. A system (warm) reset requires you to hold the UP button until the gray Palm logo (the 2nd one) appears.
