I saw this on the innopocket site:

    http://www.innopocket.com/web/showPr...=147&name=Palm

It's a hard case made of magnesium.

Now, maybe I remember my high school chemistry incorrectly, but isn't magnesium highly flammable, burning very hot and bright, and can't easily be put out with water?

Strikes me as an odd choice of material.

I'm almost certainly missing something, what is it?

Surely some sort of magnesium alloy. Reminds me of my tennis days with my Prince Magnesium Pro tennis racquet. Your right on when you say it burns. I was hot, hot, hot with that tennis racquet. I was on fire!

I believe Sony made the Clie cases out of magnesium, as does Panasonic also make their Powerbook cases out of magnesium too. The strength to weight ratio of magnesium can make the case lighter and stronger then aluminum, hence a thinner case. I believe the flammability of magnesium is pretty high, but how many of us keep our Treo's anywhere near an open flame or any type of other flammable source.

wheels for race cars are often made of magnesium. Indycar used to have them, and any time a car brushed a wall with the wheel, a lot of sparks would fly. Very pyro. These are alloys of course but are volitile when heated to high temps.

my ibm thinkpad is made of magnesium- my hp ipaq 4700 is made of magnesium- and my Innopocket ipaq case is made of magnesium... and my pants might be made of soil-ium when this case comes out. i'm a big fan of the case for my ipaq because it flips completely over the device instead of book style- however, it seems this case is book style... we'll see... also it seems that the magnesium paint on the ipaq cases chips easily but if you take a look at http://www.ipaqhq.com/forums/showthr...8293#post68293 you'll see how protective the case is

Don't know if you remeber this from HS chemistry, but while Mg burns pretty spectacularly once ignited, it's darned hard to ignite, at least in 21% oxygen. A stray spark from a cigarette or fireplace certainly won't do it, so unless you're in the habit of holding a blowtorch to your Treo, don't worry...

Mg, is an excellent material, but pure Mg goes nuts when put in water. Its an electrolyte and well...heheh it dances...rather cool and such

It opens book style but they say that it has two joints so that it pivots all the way behind the device.

The alloy part: "Light weight and high tensile Magnesium alloy rugged case for your valuable PDA." Can't imagine being able to actually sell something made of elemental magnesium.
