Last night I downloaded a program that is very functional. I am fairly new to the wireless data world so this might be old news to some but.....
The freeware is called Win-Hand Anywhere and I found it in the "freeware" section on PalmGear.com.
After an extremely simple, 3 step install on my Treo 650 and desktop PC, I am now able to access my desktop from anywhere in the WORLD! This program acts like a remote control for your PC. You can control every aspect of your home/office PC via your Treo. This is done through a secure server (according to the developer). Whether you are sitting in front of your PC or thousands of miles away, you can open web browsers, start programs, whatever!
As an example, while eating dinner out tonight I whipped out the Treo and logged on to my home PC (it must be left on to access it). Just to see if it could be done, I started, updated then ran SpyBot from my PC's desktop (no parasites thank you very much), then I clicked on my Gmail notifier icon in the taskbar which opened up my Firefox web browser. I was then able to scroll through the emails, to the one from my daughter's dance teacher, tap on it (on the Treo's screen) open it, them clearly read it to her. I might be kinda slow in this regard but..damn that is some cool #$@%!
Anyway, I'm new to the TreoCentral forums and thought I would pass it along!
    Check it out!

I don't like the setup process. PalmVNC or MobileTS work well for me, and neither one of those made me enter in all of my personal info to drop onto a server to connect to my own PC.

    Great recomendation though

Glad to have you on board, jferth. Win-Hand Anywhere is definitely a great freeware app. If you or anyone else wants more info on this app, there are 2 lengthy threads about it.

Sorry TR30, I did a search of the forums before posting and it did not show anything, probably my mistake!
Is PalmVNC freeware and if not is it worth the $ over Win-Hand?

IF you have xp prof, MobileTS is great for RDS imo...

Win-Hand has a problem. It saves about 1MB of stuff after a connection.

Nope, not a problem with Win-Hand. It has a cache that you can clear at closing or leave on the Treo/Palm to speed things up a little. Set it to clear memory on exit and it won't do save anything.

In the connection dialog, untick "save image"

    Cheers

I like pssh - lets me control my OS X Mac with the Terminal.

Leave the GUI for you Window's Sissies!

LOL...I am a Mac user primarily, so I know about GUI's.

I think it is amusing in that when DOS was the dominant OS, the idiots at PC Magazine used to berate Mac users for using a GUI.

Now, with Mac OS X, we have a great GUI but also all the 'Terminal' functionality of Unix.

If you bother to learn a dozen UNIX commands, it is amazing what you can do on a Mac with a program like pssh on a Treo - very fast, no waiting for graphics and ultimate control of the machine!

Just tried WinHand. Worked great. Pretty amazing for for free !

Which of the .prc files can I put on the card? First I tried putting all of them on the card, and Win-Hand wouldn't work. Now I put all of them on the phone and it works fine. Has anyone tried other combinations?

I tried moving it to the card with Zlauncher like a lot of my other apps, but I don't think it moves everything since I had the original icon showing next to the shortcut icon after doing it. First time that's happened to me...

where is the cache clear option I can't find it?
  16. #16
before you connect uncheck the save image checkbox. Assume it will clear the cache upon the next connect/disconnect

I also have this installed on three computers on the home network (not installed on the fourth) and it is great to be able to access at least one at any given time. The main computer, a desktop, is on 24x7. Monitoring to see what is going on is a prime reason for checking the desktop on occasion. Ben

PALMVNC Is Totally Free. It's also Standard.
Winhand Free Sucks Compared to Palmvnc
!!!!plus the free version of Winhand, doens't use passwords to protect your computer " ANY ONE WITH YOU IP CAN CONNECT TO YOUR COMPUTER " !!!!!!

    Give PalmVNC a try

I'll try palmvnc but win-hand does indeed have security on the free version. As I understand it that was not the case before but it is now.
