    Hi,
I tried searching quite a while about this on treocentral, but could not dig up anything, so here goes.
    I went into Prefs->Network->Menu->New
Service : Dial Out (Just some name)
    Connection : Wireless dial-up
    User Name : dummy
    Password : -Prompt-
Phone : typed in my home phone#

Then I tried clicking connect just to check if it actually dials my home phone. No luck. It says "Connecting to Dial Out"... sits there for a bit, then just returns to the Network config screen, If I check Menu->Options->View log, all that it says is Not connected.

My phone is on, so it should at least dial the given number.

    Which step am I missing?

    Thanks,

That's known as "CSD". The GSM providers do not allow it. ATT CDMA does (or DID at one time). Basically it won't work. It can be provisioned by a rep but they won't. Not sure about Sprint.

I just called Cingular and got CSD enabled for $3.99 per month. I guess they didn't give me any hassle because I already have a 3000 minute plan and $39.99 unlimited data.

It works like a charm now. I too was having the short duration connection dialog that would just disappear after a few seconds.

    Here are my settings:

    Prefs>>>Network
    Service: Whatever name you choose
    Connection: Wireless Dial-up
Username, password and phone number is all you need.

Oh man... explaining to them sucks.
In the meanwhile, I found this document which may help someone someday:
