Why didn't the Treo 650 come with a standard 3.5 mm headset jack?

There's plenty of room there for a standard jack ... Does the headset socket do anything else besides connecting to stereo headsets?

Yeah, it's primary function is for hands free headsets, most of which use the 2.5mm jack. I would have preferred the standard 3.5mm headphone jack too...

so i tried to listen to MP3's earlier today and noticed the 2.5mm jack also. Is the only way to listen to mp3's through that crummy headphone that came with the treo?

Take a look at the headphone adapter.

You need this if you want to listen with normal headphones.

No, it is stereo. And the sound quality from the Treo is pretty good as well. I dont mind using it when the Ipod isnt around.

can i pick one of those up from my local store or do I have to buy it from treocentral or palmone?

There's been reports that other adapters (i.e. RadioShack) don't work reliably... I'd recommend the PalmOne unit.

I bought the adapter and ended up buying the special headphones from palm. They work very well.

Palm also has a pair of stereo headphones with a mic that you can use as hands free also.

I had no idea that there was a whole different connector standard (smaller than 3.5 mm) for phone wired headsets..

    Was there a need ?

I bet any device that has a 2.5 mm connector can accomodate a 3.5 mm connector, space-wise.

    Anyway, thanks for the clarification..

I'm trying to struggle with the Bluetake BT420 bluetooth stereo headset ..

On the 650? The Treo's BT is 1.1 and doesn't support the A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution) profile required by BT stereo headsets.

I got the Radio Shack 3.5mm to 2.5mm stereo adapter and it works fine. Be sure to buy the stereo one(black) not the Mono (silver metal) these one will keep coming out of the Jack.

BT420 comes with a dongle to beam the stereo music from any audio device with a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

I posted about this in the Bluetooth section ...

I'm using the adapter from Radio Shack and it works perfectly fine (adapt 3.5mm headphones to 2.5mm jack), Make sure you get the stereo version, not the mono version. I got mine for $3.95.
