Hi all, this is my first post after finding this wonderful site!

I receive my Treo 650 tomorrow, but I'm a little worried about the palm desktop compatibility with my old software...

I'm currently running desktop software version 4.1.4

Does anyone know if I'll have any problems installing the new software and combining all of my saved contacts/schedule/tasks etc?

Please help, or tell me I'm an ***** and have nothing to worry about!

Thanks for your time, and please forgive any noobishness in my question...

    Hello tfree87,

This is Kevin from palmOne. In regard to the details on upgrading, a good place to start is the palmOne Knowledge Library article "Handheld Upgrade Guide for Treo 650". You can find it here.

    Hope that helps.

    Sincerely
    Kevin

I have the same problem. I removed an old version of Handspring Palm Desktop from my computer (from my Treo 90) prior the installation.

Then I tried to install from the CD that comes with my new Tro 650 (on
XP) and it freezes at trying to remove backup files, therefore stopping the installation.
I can't find anything on P1 about that.

    Any ideas ?

The article is currently down, but I'll keep checking.

I had the same problems on two machines. This install routine really sux for upgrades. I wasted untold hours working around it. Yes, I read and followed the palmOne routine. Real PItA.

I found this problem on a laptop support forum. Seems to be a XP-Tablet problem mostly. Are you running the tablet version?

Anyway, I also ran into it. This is how I got past it:

    - Fully remove prior version of palm desktop
    - restart machine
    - make sure nothing else is running (as much as possible)
    - install new palm desktop
    - if it hangs at "removing backup files", bring up task manager, go to process tab and kill any and all "idriver.exe" instances
    - Installation should then continue.
    - IF IT DOESN'T, reboot and then uninstall new palm desktop
    - when the uninstall hangs, kill idriver.exe instances again.
    - reboot
    - install new palm desktop, kill idriver.exe when it hangs again.
    - install should then continue.

    worked for me twice.

Let me know how it goes

PS - problem is related to a known bug between the version of installshield they use and the tablet version of xp (SP1 and SP2 both exhibit problem)

The only thing that comes immediately to mind is that installation of the Desktop can fail if you do not have full administrator rights in Windows XP. Should this be the case, the XP Help files can explain how to obtain those rights.

    Sincerely
    Kevin

    Kevin,
I emailed you about this problem yesterday.
I have the full admnistrator rights on my laptop so I don't think it's the problem.
I called P1 and spoke to Tech support; the problem seems to come from previous PD installed versions. He mentioned doing a clean install and having to edit Windows' registry.
Have you heard of this issue ?

BTW, I have XP Pro SP2 (not a tablet).

    Thanks

Windows Registry issues have been known to come up, but are not a common ocurrance. So no, I'm not surprised that tech support mentioned it. I assume they gave you directions for the editing.

Thanks so much Otter Emperor !!!
Killing "idriver.exe" during the installation was the solution.

Considering my other "non Treo" issues today, I was thrilled that I could actually help someone out today.

Thanks for letting me know it worked! I appreciate it.

I am now on the phone with P1, on hold, hold, hold, hold...wait wait wait..

'g' key died. and green line in photos. I love this thing. I wished that the build quality was better. I really do.

they hung up on me while i was explaining the problem.

This morning they have hung up on me twice. The last time was when they had just explained to me that I need to take the phone back to the retail store! I told them it was bought from P1 unlocked GSM and they hung up.

Terrible connection. Lots of static and choppy voice. Indian Accent.

    Argh.. This is so depressing.
