Also what can I do on t-mo if I don't get the data plan?
  2. #2
the minute you install your sim card, go into the prefs menu, then go into the network submenu and select "t-zones" as your service. it should auto-configure itself. you're not required to add a data plan, but just know that you'll end up paying somewhere in the ballpark of 3-5cents a kb.

I've been using T-Zones for free for quite a while now. No per KB charge, for me at least.

well, t-zones has to be added to your account. you have to request it, but is just $4.99 for unlimited wap access, which is perfectly fine for use with your treo.

not 100% on this, but i don't think treos can do wap. try just myvoicestream.com instead.

I called T-Mobile and spoke with a 'data specialist' and he told me the url for the T-Zones site was wap.myvoicestream.com - so, I'm assuming it's still active.

What am I trying to accomplish? I'm trying to access the T-Zones site that displays CNN, ESPN, etc. content. It's just text-based so it was quick to load pages and read articles.

With a Treo, you can access other wap sites but not T-Zones. You can come close by going to my.t-mobile.com/pda/. You can can login and then go to T-Zones settings and get access to your T-Zones favorites. But it takes time and you have to login every time. I've done this on the Treo 270 and the Treo 600. It's the only way to get close. I'll get my 650 tomorrow but I expect it to be the same.

I'm trying to get T-Zones to work on my Treo 650. I select the T-Zones option from the network menu, but when I goto Blazer, it says that it has connected, however no data ever downloads, and it says eventually: "Data Timeout: The page download could not be completed. Please try again later."

    Thoughts?

I don't know if this helps anyone or not, but I just checked the config on my Nokia 3650...it's wap.voicestream.com not wap.myvoicestream.com

...still waiting for my 650 so I can't test if it will still work when I switch sims...I have the tzones plan but at $2.99 not $4.99 (grandfathered)

at least with my sim, I'm not able to type in manually the settings, I just have a drop down in the prefs to select one of the following:

    T-Zones
    T-Mobile VPN
    T-Mobile Internet

It only allows me to connect with T-Zones, and even then I can't hit any pages. I'm on hold with T-Mobile now, the guy is trying to say that I can't use T-Zones with this phone, that I need T-Mobile Internet, is that correct?

the setup for me with the new unlocked gsm treo and tmobile could not have been easier. i simply inserted my SIM, clicked on the web browser and started going. also, using versamail with a .mac and a pop account works just fine.

so, for some reason it was very simple for me. oh, forgot to mention, i do have a tmobile internet account, not tzones.

Speaking with the Tech now. T-Zones with a Treo will only get you email. You need the Tmobile internet in order to get web access. Gonna switch, takes 48-72 hours to apply.

that's complete hogwash. call them back right now and tell them that you're no longer going to use the treo and hence would like to revert back to your $4.99 unlimited t-zones. it has all the web functions of the more expensive data package without breaking your pocket.

I think this is correct. Though it is dependent on where you live. For quite some time, it was possible to sign up fo the TZones plan and be able to browse the web because of some open ports that TMobile did not close to those on the TZone only plan. They have started cracking down on this and I know that Philadelphia residents must sign up for the Tmobile Internet plan now.
