All I know is that someone on this board opened up their big mouth about how the unlocked 600 was 700$ upon release and how the 600$ 650 was a good deal and since Palm1 pays folk to monitor this board..... Go figure! (then again Cingular could've put the pressure on p1 to up the ante upon reading these boards)

well that's the downside to chatting vigorously about this device.
Hmmmm? As bad as I want this thing...It is still shady on the part of P1 to up the price by a bean! First the memory bloat, then the leaked sound patch and now this!!!! Way to go P1. Keep it up. Here?

Or think of it this way...

Palm wants to sell it lower, but Cingular insisted before it went up on the website. Then, they let it out for a 599, and jacked it back up when Cingular complained..."Oops"

The $599 was for us insane TCers who check this site every 5 minutes (10 at work) to keep us happy....

That sucks -- Who's with me.

Even though Sprints 650 isnt GSM im sure they may have put on some pressure re that price as well- for example Joe CUstomer was going to switch to Sprint from TMobile cause they dont have a Palm PDA phone and he uses alot of Palm based programs , want only one device --But look there is a unlocked Treo 650 oh now i'm gonna stay with TMobile

Bloody P1 Muppets, I checked the 599 price last night (local time) and was supposed to place an order today. Im sticking with my Handspring 600 :P

I doubt they'll change the price on orders that have already been placed. I'm glad I ordered yesterday.

Somehow this move doesnt surprize me, they did the same thing in australia a few days earlier... :/

P1 will have to honor the price of all the orders they took at the lower price if they have any brain activity left. They can not just change the price on existing orders that would violate the merchant agreement they have with all the credit card processors. Huge no no. I would consider that fruad for overcharging thier customers after they have agreed to a prices then given them an order confirmation and reciept of sokme sort. The only way to really do this they would be faced with cancelling all the orders for some BS reason then raise the price They know wha there doing here and I would guess if they took thousands of orders then cancelled them the customers who did order at this price could make quite a stink for them. They might be able to get by with that but everyone who looked at this would see it for what is was.

Maybe they raised the price because of the developer people all trying to sign upto save a $100. They cancelled that right away, did they raise that to $699 too? They were $499 then they killed the offer making it $599 so maybe those went to $699. Yikes!

No offense, but I seriously doubt that P1 raised the price based on someone's post here. Companies don't pull these prices out of their butts, a lot of research goes into the decision. It may have been what they said, a typo. Or maybe Cingular did complain or it come have been an error somewhere along the chain and not a simple typo (there's a webmaster looking for a new job )

Just be happy that a lot of you guys got the cheaper price.

Come on, don't blame the people on TC that this happened. Yes, P1 obviously checks, there's plenty of evidence of that. But P1 changing the price is not the fault of someone opening "up their big mouth." It's possible that P1 really did make a typo mistake that was corrected only after 2 days, as reported by a CSR. I know it sounds like a really stupid mistake but big companies make really stupid mistakes like that all time. The world isn't a perfect place. It's also very possible some execs saw the order volume in the first 2 days and said "heck we could have charged $699 for this thing" so they did. It's also possible that sales for Cingular versus unlocked phones weren't what execs at either company had expected and to correct the issue they changed the price. I doubt however that the price was changed because someone at P1 reading TC was reminded of what they charged for the 600 originally.

In my opinion the simpliest explanation is that it was a typo. P1 does read TC and P1 cares about the early adopter market seqment. Companies take care with pricing because to make a price change after ordering has begun can be a customer service/relation nightmare. When they changed the price after 2 days of ordering they knew there would be a sh*tstorm. I think they would have wanted to get the price right in the first place, and if they had put it out at $699 to start a lot of people would have said "well that's what they charged for the 600 so okay." They screwed up and they know it, but a $100US typo has to be fixed so they fixed it. Someone on the website team is still getting yelled at I'll tell you what.
Oh, so they have internet on computers now!

At least it paid to be a bleeding-edge early adopter for once.

Does this mean they are raising the price cause they finally made a T6** that works as advertised ?

my debit card has been charged. i called palmone this morning to push the charge through (because it was suspended from insufficient funds yesterday), and when i checked my "card activity" on my account, $599 had been put through.

i admit, i don't completely understand how electronic charges like this work, but i know when i get gasoline at the pump, they put a $1 charge though to check for funds and then that changes a day or two later. i don't believe this is a "hold", i believe palm is actually charging us for the product. that said, i doubt palm will pull out on orders already made... that'd be a hell of a business FUBAR on their part at this point.

Or was it you? Big Mouth.

(I was so hot at the time of reading this price-hike that I needed someone to blame if not this whole community here whom I absolutely love and respect. Still believe that heavy, frenzied speculation here can have its good, and bad)

I agree that from Palm's perspective, this whole Roadshow thing was likely a big boondoggle. However, we're talking about 519 phones here! I don't have any idea even of the order of magnitude of phones they're shipping out, but I'm sure that 519 is a very very small number to them. They should send them out ASAP just to shut us up! What if our message boards were crammed with "Look at the cool thing I'm doing with my 650!" rather than "I'm still waiting, P1 sucks, who's with me?"

In a funny side story, I have a friend who has a Treo 300, but is by no means a power user, and he knows I have a 650 on order. Every day he asks me, "Did you get your Treo yet?" And I have to tell him, no, maybe next month.

Face it, we TC'ers are ambassadors for P1. We love their products, we evangelize, and we're probably better salespeople than the majority of people at the phone kiosks at the mall. Throwing us a bone doesn't seem like the worst possible move for P1.

Man, I was going to wait until at least a bunch of us treocentral'ers got their unlocked T650's before I ordered.

I have tmo, and am not under contract, so I guess I'll wait and see how much their subsidized version will cost..... but I pray they don't cripple anything like DUN or anything.... I have the unlocked 600 bought directly from Handspring (at the time) off their website. Had the 270 before that.....

Don't know if I want a branded phone. Only time will tell.

Why the h&## hasn't someone asked the obvious question:

What makes this phone WORTH $699 to begin with? $599 was already nose bleed territory; how could you ever justify $699? There's some pretty good low end notebooks out there for that or less.
Remember, the "P" in PDA stands for personal.
If it works for you, it is "P"erfect.
