    I know all of you lucky US guys are awaiting delivery of your 650's, and I wanted to know if it would be possible to buy the contractless 650 from Cingular (using a friend in the US as the delivery address) and then shipping it over here.

    A few things:

    I assume people are looking at how to unlock the phone.
    Is the Cingulary quad band.

    Good luck to all of you waiting for your new toys, why people outside of the US have to wait so long!

    Yes, Cingular 650s are locked.

    I'm also patiently waiting and I think the only options for non-US people are going to be

    a) PalmOne US via a US address;
    b) PalmOne Europe;
    c) Some third-party retailer such as Expansys.

    I have no idea at the moment how long it will take (if ever) before P1 Europe start selling the T650. Option a) is time-consuming and risks things like VAT. The only date I've had so far (and I don't think it is based on much real knowledge) is "not before March" from Expansys.

    after March is what the Rogers guy told me was his "best guess" for when it would come to Canada. This was partially based on release pattern of 600.

    Obviously being a desparate man I want it a soon as possible. Would the Cingular phone work in the UK if it was unlocked ? I am under the assumption a method to unlock will be available shortly after the GSM version is available from Cingular going on past experience.

    As far as I know an unlocked GSM phone should work with a SIM from any provider including European providers. (One of the main advantages of GSM and unlocked phones. A lot people when they travel get local SIMs to avoid expensive roaming charges.)

    The biggest problem you'll have with the scenario you describe is warrenty issues. If you're unlucky and get a defective phone you have may run into difficulties getting it serviced or replaced free of charge. (Not a risk I'm willing to take after reading about some of the issues like the soft 'P' key that in some cases has required a replacement phone.)

    JD,

    I've purchased several phones, including my 600, from mobilefly.com in Singapore. They ship world wide and have great customer service. I was told they would be selling the 650 by the end of the month (jan) or first week in Feb. My point is that their timetable seems to fall in line with some thoughts on this board that the "Generic" or "Unbranded" GSM release will coincide with the Cingular release. So perhaps you won't have to go through the hassle of having your phone mailed to someone here in the States. Send mobilefly and email and I bet they can give you price on shipping to your location.
    I haven't received a notice from them the phone is in stock but I bet it's coming soon!

    I didn't seen the 650 listed anywhere on their site, not even in the "coming soon" section. I emailed them to ask about it.

    Well they sure do reply quickly... especially as it's 1am in Singapore at the moment. Here's the response:

    ---

    Dear Geoff,

    It should be released very soon, sometime next month.
    Pricing details is still not available at this moment.

    From,
    Melvin

    Mobilefly pricing is a tad higher than what I see in the States but I have the satisfaction of know the phone hasn't been fondled by a carrier.

    Where do you live?

    The GSM650 is quadband and should work on any GSM network (providing it is not locked to a US network)

    I am in the UK, so if it is quad band it will work. That is one good thing. I know that from Cingular with no plan it will be $550 and with the exchange rate that works out quite cheap.

    I doubt I will get such a good deal outside the US. Does anyone know what it will cost from P1 unbranded etc. etc.

    You've got that right. I'm impressed when I get reply back within an hour to a query. (Usually I give a company anywhere from 24 to 48 hours to reply before I consider it poor customer service, but immediate replies always get my attention.)

    Anyway they confirmed for me that they are expecting it but don't have pricing or availability yet.

    Don't bet on this. Cingular might have it on it's website for $549, but retail store won't let you buy without a contract.

    When the unlocked 600 was first available, the mobilefly price was $749 and the DOML price was $799. For an unlocked GSM imported from overseas you are going to pay a big premium. Expansys price for Palm devices are way above what you would pay in the U.S. I expect they will sell the GSM 650 for $699 at least.

    Expansys are estimating the price in the uk to be between 500 and 650 pounds. At current exchange rates that's somewhere between $940 and $1200. Wow.
