Does anyone know whether we can expect to be able to buy the generic 650 GSM directly from palmOne or palmOne stores rather than through Cingular on the same release date as the Cingular version (whatever that date ends up being)?

Yes, the unlocked GSM Treo 650 should be available through P1 at the same time when Cingular GSM Treo 650 comes out.

Thanks! Aside from being able to use SIM cards in Europe when I travel, what are the benefits of getting the unlocked 650 versus the locked Cingular 650? Is it worth it to pay the additional $150 or $200?

If I buy a generic Treo 650, will I have the same functionality as a Cingular treo in terms of email and web access. Are there internal settings for wap gateways, etc... Also does a cingular treo have some kind of firmware or sim setup that allows the cingular system to update the unit's software where a generic treo would have to be done manually???

Joao, next time have a quick look around the forums and/or use the search feature.
This thread: http://discussion.treocentral.com/sh...ad.php?t=70480 was just a few below yours and it answers your questions exactly..

Everything I've heard says the contrary. What source do you have for that, Rome?

I'd LOVE to believe that's true. I just haven't heard that.

Didn't it take time for the P1 unbranded T600 to show up after the major carriers released theirs?

Thanks for the advice, ToolkiT. Actually though, I did read through that thread, but it doesn't address the questions I asked. I was asking about what benefits there are to the unlocked GSM phone as compared to the locked Cingular phone, not GMS versus CDMA. ...and whether it's fully functional compared to the locked phone. Can I get T-Mobile service on it, or do I just have to take it to Cingular to get their service. Thanks though.

    I stand corrected.. misread that..
An unlocked GSM should be as functional (if not more) as a locked one..
but depending on your contract you may be able to access certain services/plans... but technically they are the same, it is merely a way so the telco's can make sure they recoup the 'discount' they give you on the phone..

Just got off the phone with the palmOne store in Boston, MA and they said they should be receiving it in mid-February.

I sure hope you're right and the info I got was wrong but I'm not holding my breath...ugh, this blows.

Specifically, comparing the Cingular T650 to an unlocked one: the unlocked one should have Bluetooth DUN enabled whereas there are reports that the Cingular-branded version has disabled BT DUN...

Go with an unlocked one if you can...

Just got off the phone with palmOne online store. I was told that palmOne will have a pre-sale prior to Cingular's 650 going on sale. He said that palmOne always offers a pre-sale a few weeks prior to the carrier on-sale. ...that in the case of Sprint, palmOne pre-sold it, with shipping times of 1-3 weeks and Sprint stores receiving it about 1 month after the initial pre-sale date. I, of course, don't know what'll be with the 650 GSM, but this is what I'm told. Any thoughts/knowledge otherwise?

For those who attended the road show and signed up for the GSM version of Treo 650, they will be getting an unlocked P1 branded Treo 650, not a Cingular branded one. So here is source #1.

I was also told by a P1 exec at the road show that the unlocked GSM version will come out around the same time when the Cingular Treo is available. Source #2.

Well, that's awesome news then. Better sources than I've heard for a lot of things.

I signed up for the webinar, but work got out of hand and I couldn't watch the highlights. I'm assuming we have no option to sign up for the Unlocked GSM version like those who attended?

I watched the webinar and there was no option to get a Treo at a reduced price.

They also said that the unlocked version will not be available until after all the carriers have it for sale.

I knew it!!! In the GSM thread someone has said P1 told them the unlocked would be available the same time as Cingular. But this is not what they did with the 600 and I didn't think it made sense.

Are you sure you are quoting correctly or are you embellishing a bit? That little 3 letter word ... A-L-L can make big difference in the intent of their statement. Are you sure they said "all the carriers" (which could mean 6 months or more - which I find hard to believe) or did they say "until it was released TO THE CARRIERS" which could happen as soon as tomorrow.

that was exactly what was said, but i feel more like they were talking about cingular

I sure hope so because that would make a HUGE difference. It also makes more sense.

We will have to see, but they didn't release the GSM unlocked (in the U.S.) until all the GSM carriers (T-Mobile was last) had them. If they intend to sell to T-Mobile it makes perfect sense for them to not offer the unlocked until after T-Mobile picks it up. Of course they never confirmed this or anything. An unlocked was "coming soon" for months until T-Mobile starts selling.

My prediction is that if you don't see the unlocked within a week of Cingular selling it you aren't going to see it until after T-Mobile starts either.

What makes anyone think (assume) the unlocked Treo 650 will have bluetooth DUN enabled. Don't you think the reason bluetooth DUN is disabled in the Cingular (and Sprint) version would also make them disable it in the unlcocked/PalmOne branded version? And the truth is, none of us know what that reason is (yes, I've read the speculation and rumors.)

Either way I'm holding out for the unlocked. That's what I did with my T600. I'd rather pay more to have the fully unlocked model. But I still have little faith or assumption that DUN will be enabled on it. I think this is a speculation that everyone has run wild with. Albiet, I HOPE I'm wrong, and I do agree that you have a greater chance of DUN being enabled on the unlocked treo than with the Cingular (which as 0 chance.)
