This is a suggestion (try this at your own risk - which is little).
If your palm is still working fine:
SDCard reader: delete everything off of it
    insert into Palm
    select Format sdcard
remove from Palm and insert back into card reader.
Hopefully you'll have some folders listed (inc. "palm").
Then try renaming the palm folder to "bak" copy both palm and rom over
transfer back to your palm and try again.

I'd be very hesitant installing a rom if you are having difficulties. You could end up with a dead phone.

    Mission accomplished!

After trying everything, I thought "screw it" and did a hard reset. Then I put my sd card back in the treo, tried it again, and it worked perfectly! My wife can now stop asking "Are you on speakerphone because it sounds horrible!"

Thanks to those who took time to help me.

You may not have had enough ram on Treo?
Hard reset may have cleared out some ram to copy some from card into RAM so It can execute it.
