????? The Treo 600 price was $599, the Sprint Treo 650 price was $599 (without contract), the rumoured Cingular price is $549 and you're surprised and think it's too expensive??
    Main Phone: Treo 270/600/650/700w/700p/750v/Motorola Q/iPhone
    Tried but sold: Motorola Q/Nokia E61/700wx/HTC TyTN/Treo 680

Depending on rebates, the GSM 650 could be a bargain...relatively speaking.
    Smartphone Evolution:
    i330 (8/03), i500 (5/04), i600 (11/04), PPC6601 (12/04), Treo 650 (1/05), PPC6600 (10/05), PPC6700 (12/05), Treo 650 (6/06), PPC6700 (9/06), Treo 700wx (10/06)

well comared to sprint's which is $319. i read somewhere on this board that the gsm would be about the same.

That price is not Sprint's. It's being offered by a third party requiring a 2 year contract and using a rebate I think.

Um, that's price with activation of a new account. The above prices are for Treos that are free and clear of any contract.

i'm with at&t now. do you think my best bet is to go out and get a cheap/free phone from cingular, get the media works plan and then next week get a treo for $549 and just witch the simm?

how will i know if the treo is unlocked? i guess i'll have to buy any place but cingular.

I did just this ... got a free Motorola v180 (it was unlocked, had a relative drop in their AT&T card) ... got the $19.99 Mediaworks plan and $39.99 450 minute plan .... Switchover took 5 minutes.

Unlocked my Treo 600 and am waiting for my last AT&T bill (to see if there are no mysterious charges) ... no dissconnect fee.

so you're saying i can go get a phone, take my at&t simm and put it in and order a cingular plan on it?

    Me! I will buy one.

Would you take a 3-year contract in exchange for getting a GSM Treo 650, warranty lost/stolen and accessories free?

I will! I held off buying myself a Christmas gift this year so I could get this phone! All I wanted for Christmas was my GSM...Now it may be my Valentine's Day gift to myself!

If it wasn't for my having taken advantage of the offer from the Roadshow I would have already given up on the Treo 650. There are already better devices out that I want and I am likely sell the 650 as soon as it gets here so I can buy something else. The XDA mini (iMate Jam) is one example, and though I'm not a fan of Nokia, the 9300 Communicator looks like something to consider. I'm not completely dissin' the 650, but I think we are expecting more than it can deliver (proven with the Sprint model).

Just to let you all know...I went in to Cingular today, and they said the phone would be 449.99 with a 2 year service agreement PLUS a $50 mail in rebate....making the phone $399.99

How much for an unlocked, unbranded phone?
I would not lock myself into a 3 year deal for a free GSM 650. In less than 12 months you will hate yourself for doing so, when you want the next device.

Someone will figure out how to unlock the Cingular phone in no time, I'm sure....

Sorry, let me clear it up ...

You would buy a $0 phone and a cingular plan. Your phone is unlocked from Cingular.

You get a new phone and SIM card from Cingular.

Take the Cingular sim and drop it into your unlocked Treo 600. Give the free phone to anyone else (AT&T, T-Mobile) they can drop their sim in and use the phone.

You can always switch devices, you are only locked in with Cingular. You can always pay the fee to get out early.

or you can buy one of the cheapo phones from amazon and get up to $125 back and apply that money to pay off some of the 650's price once you get your rebate
