What are the functional differences (if any) between using the power button at the top of the phone versus the screen off hardware button?

The button on the top only turns off the wireless (so your treo becomes a pure OS5 PDA, no phone, no internet). And the screen off, well, it turns off the screen and locks the keyboard (or so, you can change in pref: keyguard)

Actually, if you press the top button briefly, it is functionally equivalent to pressing the 4th hard button. If you hold the top button down down, it toggles the radio.
GoodLink by default remaps the 4th button for their app, so you have to use the top button for both phone and screen toggle.
