I'm trying to send email from versamail through my ISP (Speakeasy). When I hit send, the following error shows up:

    451 See
    http://cr.yp.to/docs/smtplf.html

    How do I fix this?

Ok. It sounds this won't go away with versamail.

Can anyone tell me what the server name and login info are for using Sprints SMTP server?

this means that speakeasy is running qmail, at least on the mailserver you're connecting to. qmail is pedantic about the email RFC's, 822, 2822, et al. As such, bare linefeeds are prohibited in SMTP email. unfortunately, many other MTA's (Mail Transport Agents - the server-side software for transporting email) never enforced that prohibition, so many MUA (Mail User Agents, client email software a la Eudora, Outlook, versamail) writers never bothered to conform to the standard on the client side, either.

i believe most sites that run qmail patch it so that it won't enforce the strict bare-linefeeds rule. i know i do, and have for many years. speakeasy either has chosen not to patch, or is unaware of the 'need' to patch.

ultimately, it's shared blame. the MUA - versamail - should conform to the standard, and not send bare linefeeds. the MTA - qmail - should be as lenient as possible in what it rejects (spam notwithstanding) and let mail with bare linefeeds through.

bottom line: contact speakeasy support. ask them to patch their qmail to not block mail with bare linefeeds.
