I've spent hours reading threads on real time push email to my treo. Chatter with IMAP seems to be the best solution. I think. But here's my problem.

I use mostly Yahoo mail, POP3. If I forward it to fastmail, then I cannot use POP3 as yahoo only let's me pick one or the other, not both. I need pop3 for my desktop outlook.

I just want to be able to read and respond emails quickly as they come in. I tried treohelper, but with Yahoo, their forward to a mobile phone requires a keyword such as my userid to forward mail, which forwards pretty much all mail to my inbox, including SPAM! Their spam filter works really great, but forwarding rules bypasses them. Treohelper works great, but I don't want the spam. On top of that I can't get versamail to give me an indication via LED from any program (butler) that I have new mail.

Back to Chatter, or snappermail IMAP. Do any of the IMAP services continually ping my POP3 mail accounts for mail say every minute? Then push that message out to my treo?

Versamail picks up my yahoo mail quite well. I have it set to retrieve every 30 mins and it seems to do the job. I know others have had issues. It's not push email, but is free and works with Yahoo.

For true push mail, I think there is no substitute for chatter. But you would need to have yahoo mail redirected to your fastmail account. I don't understand why you cant reconfigure desktop outlook to interact with your fastmail acct (retrieve and send mail)?

As for a spam filter, I like Spambayes which is open source and works great with outlook. I get basically zero spams/day. You can get the program at scourceforge.net

Ok, so I spent another 3 hour reading the forums. I downloaded Chatter and setup a fastmail.fm account for free. So far so good. realtime push email. the spam i was not just at my desktop but now my treo. It looks like fastmail has spam filtering. we'll see how good it is. i got one viagra add today already.

I think if Yahoo ever sets up IMAP, or allows you to forward email after it goes through spamguard it's the perfect solution. I'm really liking their spam protection it's been GREAT.

The other option I tried was using TreoHelper to launch and retrieve email once getting an sms message from yahoo. Problem again with spam, as yahoo forwards email to your mobile device via rules of which does not go through the spam filtering first. i sent an email to yahoo asking about this, but I doubt i'll hear from them anytime soon.

I think I ultimately would like the versamail to get as close to push email as possible as I like the close integration into the 650. Such as providing me how many unread messages I have both in the phone view and the agenda view under calendar. The other advantage of this solution with treohelper is that it doesn't need a constant network connection thus probably saving battery. if i don't get a lot of emails that day, it doesn't need to connect very often.

i'll give chatter a few weeks during the trial. but i'm not sure i like IMAP in outlook as i have now a seperate inbox that I'm used to. just more organization issues now.

I used DataViz InboxToGo for over ten months on my Treo 600 and loved it. It integrated flawlessly with attachments with DTG.

What makes it so nice is that there is no desktop client needed. They have a 3rd party server that retrieves and pushes the emails onto the handheld. Very slick.

I now have the PPC-6601 and this is the single app that I truely miss!!!!!

I'd like to use Yahoo Mail also but Versamail keeps picking up the every folder, including my Bulk folder, which I receive 200+ mails a day.

Is there a way to specify auto-syncing only the Inbox folder in Yahoo Mail?

I think it is a setting on the yahoo site. Somewhere where you pick that you want POP access you can say to not include the bulk folder. I'm using VersaMail against my yahoo account and only seeing the inbox. I set it up a long time ago so I don't quite remember.

For Spam filtering (and IMAP), there's nothing better than Mailblocks.com.

    Smartphone -

Why do you need TreoHelper if you are using Chatter as a Push email client? Also, if you want to save battery life, you can use Chatter in an offline mode and have it sync at scheduled intervals. I was having a similar problem with battery drain and missing calls on VZW, so when I am not expecting urgent emails I use Chatter offline with qsync's every 3 minutes. This saves battery life and reduces blocked calls. But this is no replacement for the Push functionality of Chatter - as long as I am within 3 hours of a charge, it is online sync for me.

Also, fastmail is awesome! I use it with Outlook Express at home and it works great. I have my personal pop3 email account forwarded to fastmail, and my SMTP's are disguised as the pop3 account, as all my friends know this address. This is an excellent solution as well - plus, I can now access all my filed personal emails from any computer, which I was not able to do prior to using fastmail as my personal email server/redirector.

I tried chatter for a little bit. I am concerned about battery life as I am sms'ing all day and on the phone. I am now using trehelper with versaforward which is running on a desktop computer at home that's always on. I use outlook on my laptop.

I am now using versamail but will probably upgrade to snapper enterprise.

The reason the solution above works so well is that versaforward has filters. So certain emails such as the ones from treocentral.com do not get forwarded to my phone thus doesn't waste a connection and download. I also filter a few other discussion forums like avsforum.com. With the amount of emails I get I really like the fact that this solution I have only alerts me of emails I want. Plus I have treohelper right now to not delete the sms so i get an LED notification.

I am going to try chatter again to see if it does drain the battery. I wish I could get LED notification and integration of the unread number of messages in the agenda calendar view.

Also, I'm not 100% sold on IMAP yet. The problem with forwarding my yahoo straight to fastmail is that it also forwards my spam. I am on the free account on fastmail so i don't know if the paid service of fastmail does spam filtering well. Yahoo spamguard is awesome as I've taught it over the last year what's spam and what's not.

So bottom line is if I can rid spam, and if chatter doesn't drain my battery, and I can get LED notification of emails which is a very important feature, and get integration in the agenda view of calendar. Chatter would be perfect.

Outlook use with IMAP is a little different as I have thousands of email that were POP and now local on my outlook. I now have a completely different inbox on IMAP of which I have to just spend more time cleaning up and moving into folders.

Chatter gives you an LED notification of new mail (in your choice of solid green, blinking green, solid red or solid orange) plus an audio notification - and also has an optional "nag" feature (keeps buzzing at you until you retrieve the new mail). It also shows the number of unread messages in the Phone app on a 650. Chatter's author doesn't have the message count working in the Agenda view yet, but is working on it.

You can alleviate the battery drain issues by configuring Chatter to do "timed QuickSyncs" every X minutes.

    Chatter rocks!!

Do you need to download and read every email? I find that I let the majority of my emails go to my laptop. I setup my work and comcast (both POP3) emails to forward a copy to my SMS, so when an email comes in I get enought of the email to make a decision...download it via versamail or just delete the SMS message and wait until I get back in the office...great way to be in control of what comes into your versamail account....at least it works for me.
