I have not seen any dialing problems while on the Sprint network with the 650 (only the famous delay), but this week I am in an area without Sprint coverage and roaming is a real challenge with my phone.

I can receive roaming calls just fine, but I can not dial out. When dialing a number or selecting an entry from the phone book, it goes into the "dialing" mode for 2 seconds but then jumps back to the main phone screen. I never see the timer active and it does not ring.

When I deselect digital roaming from the menu, wait until the phone has no network and switch roaming back on, I can make a call when I do it within about 10 seconds. If I don't make the call within 10sec I get the problem described above or I have to do this famous switchback from no-roam to roam and I have 10sec to execute the call... Activating/deactivating data/bluetooth did not make a difference, nor did resetting the phone (several times...).

Other folks around me that use Sprint can make calls just fine (however not on PRL 10025 and no Treo 650...).

I have the roaming option ($5/month) and had no problems roaming with my Treo 600 in this area (with PRL 10024).

Anybody else experience the same problem?

You are not alone. Search other threads in this forum, many other people have been experiencing this (though I was not aware of the trick you describe with turning roaming off and then on again). Talked with dozens of people at Sprint to no avail, but if more people call in about it then hopefully they will get the software people to look into it. If you do call, get them to transfer you to the Treo specialists.

Chuckie, thanks for the confirmation... I did do a search, but could not find anybody who described roaming problems related to the 650. Just give it a try again, but still did not find anything about roaming issues. Send me a link to a thread if you can.

The quick fix works fine (I am using this method for 2 days now), but it is a pain to do all this just to make a quick call.

Will check with the Sprint folks when I get back in the world of the living...

I have this problem as well. Try dialing 911 while roaming. It won't go through. Now that has me concerned...

ok... now I did some better search and found Chuckie's earlier posts about this problem. By the way, did you ever receive a new unit and did it make a difference?

After getting really desperate I finally performed the hard reset, but still no luck...

The good old trick of deselect => select roaming still works, but still sucks...

No, the new unit did not help at all I'm afraid. There was one person who says he got Sprint to fix it by 'fixing something in his account', but I have not been able to get in touch with him. At any rate, I'm somewhat suspicious that this would not be a device-level fix anyway because it really does smell like a software problem.

The more people who can talk to the Treo support people the better, because eventually they will realize it is a real problem and actually get it fixed.

Same experience, with Palm One Tech support telling me its a Sprint Problem and Sprint telling me its a Palm One software program.

Advise me if you get an answer to this fix. I do a lot of Roaming and need to make outgoing calls.

    Thanks,

I don't have this problem with my 650 and I make at least one call while roaming each day (in the subway). It must be an account problem. Maybe ask the CSR to send it to the next level up?

Not being able to place roaming calls is NOT an account problem. I pay $10/month for 100 romaing minutes, and this is the first phone I've ever owned on Sprint that didn't allow me to place a roaming call.

Also, not being to even dial 911 while on roaming MOST CERTAINLY isn't an account problem.

Good suggestion, however, it has to be a problem with the software. Furthermore, sprint would be completely okay for you to place a roaming call if you don't have "roaming" added to your account. They'll make a fortune from you.

Also, I'm running PRL 10025 and have the roaming option with my account. So at least in my case, those two items are not causing me a problem. Hopefully you can get it resolved soon and post what the fix was.

Maybe it depends on the roaming network. I was in rural Ohio and Verizon is the only provider... Let me know what network you use

Took the phone to a Sprint store yesterday and the technician told me that the phone was fine (I guess that means that the problem is me...). Asked the manager very politely to take it up to the next level and he would give it a try...

    To be continued...

All my roaming so far has been on Verizon (the only provider in the DC subway). I have yet to roam outside of the DC area or on a system other than Verizon.

I was roaming for the first time in GA and did not have any problems calling out with my 650.

I have attempted to Roam in Norhtern Arizoan, Northern New Mexico and Southern Arizona, all with the same problem. I can receive calls, but not make them. Sprint and Plam One do not reconize the problem. I am unable to make 911 calls, which Sprint tells me, this would indicate this to be a phone software problem.

Did anybody install the new beta rom update (actually for the sound update, but it probably does more)? I wonder if it would fix the roaming problem...

I also have the roaming problem. Called Sprint and after more than 1.5 hours on the phone managed to get a new phone. Same problem.

By the way, I also live in Southern Arizona and can recieve calls while roaming but cannot dial out.

Not sure what to do now.

After testing a bit with the new rom update (patchced by shadowmite to get rid of trash apps and including his dun hack and voice memo), it seems like my problem with the outbound roaming calls is solved. I am not sure yet (have not been back in Ohio), but from the 3 times that I could find a roaming spot, I could make a call!!!!

Let me know if somebody else has the same results with the rom update...

I have the same problem with Roaming. It just doesn't work. It works fine on my old Treo600.
BTW I have a question about Shadowmite's ROM images: will using these make my phone un-patchable by Sprint in the future?

Probably not. In fact if you read the threads, Faisal, the orignal users who was given the patch and rom uploader was also given an extra defaul Sprint Treo Rom in case the update didn't work so he could revert back to the original Rom. So I imagine you could always update the Rom...
