I just did a cheezy "hack" to force roaming...I have a crummy PCS signal at home and was trying to find a solution...

Formed an aluminum foil cup over the top of the phone...waited for the phone to roam and made a call! It works great! Attenuate the antenna and voila!

Not...anyone know how to force roam on a 650?

I called up Sprint tech service and got this reply:

I researched our records and noticed that the problem you are facing is
not a know issue. I am thankful to you, as you initiated to raise the
    problem.

In order to get the problem rectified at the earliest, I request you to
please visit the Sprint Store, as suggested by our specialist. Your
handset will be checked. If it's a handset problem, will assist you
with the rectification of the problem. If it's a service issue, the
matter will be escalated to the concerned department.

Your account has been notified with the problem, which will ensure a
    smooth interaction.

So I went to the Sprint store (had to go twice and had about a 2hr wait time). Tech tested the phone and could not find a problem. He even tried to convince me that he had the phone in roaming mode in his backoffice and could make a call, however he did not want to repeat that roaming mode in front of me (go figure...). Got the manager (Kris Werner, Sprint store in Tampa on Kennedy Blvd) involved he and promised me to get in touch with the higher ups. I kept up my hopes up and contacted tech support after a week and received the following reply:

I am sorry for the ongoing problem.

I am unable to locate any communication from the in-store representative on the account. I request you to please ask the in-store representative to notify the account that your handset is working fine.

Once the account is notified, we will assist you appropriately.

    We are here for you!!

So I guess I have to thank the manager for being commited to Sprint customer service and never registrating my problem. If you feel like you want to say thank you please mail: kris.a.werner@mail.sprint.com for taking this problem serious. Based on the reaction from tech support he never registered anything on my account and they did not even register the in store test

Man, what a load of crap. Tons of people have been complaining about the issue here, and some of them have been complaining about it to Sprint I have to figure. What do we have to do to get somebody at Sprint to actually put it in the 'known problem' database?

I have spoken with people at PalmOne and now finally at Sprint, and it appears that a fix is now on the way, although we may not like it.

Apparently it will require re-flashing the phone, which can only be done at your not-so-friendly, not-so-neighborhood Sprint PCS store. Only certain stores will have that capability.

I was told that it should be available by the end of January.

    Hey Shadowmite.....

If Sprint has to flash our phones, does this mean that your flash rom improvements will be nuked? Will you come up with new ROMS's with Sprint's improvements plus yours? Thanks for all you do.

This info did not trickle down to the Sprint folks... Just got off the phone with tech support to log this until now unknown issue...

    Bob,

I'm desperate enough to ask for details on your cheesy "hack." I tried something similar once by just covering up the antenna and it didn't work. It sounds like you covered the entire top of the phone or used a real cup around which you wrapped the foil. Anyway, I'd love to have more detail. Thanks!

Just sent the following email to Kris Werner at Sprint:

I take this problem very seriously. If Sprint does not issue an announcement soon I will return my phone.

Sprint tech support need to constantly monitor TreoCentral discussion to get an early warning system going. These people are very intelligent and so far very loyal SprintPCS customers.

Hey.. I had this problem over the weekend. I was in the mountains for a few hours. I couldn't make any calls although my roaming signal was good. I reset and everything.

I finally tried something as a last resort. Adding a "1" to the front of my phone numbers... It works... wierd!!

Hmmm... I gave that a try before and it did not help me one bit... I even changed the "north america" dialing settings and it did not do anything.

Maybe you were lucky and got out of reach from the Sprint towers when you tested with the 1-prefix. I did not have a problem roaming outside the US far away from Sprint networks

I was in Telluride CO this past week---same problem as everyone else---able to receive calls, not able to make outgoing calls. Was not aware this was a common problem until my search on the internet revealed this site.

When I called Sprint from CO, they had "never heard" of this problem, and the "specialist" suggested doing a hard reset. As you can guess, the problem remains. This after spending about 1.5 hours on the phone with Sprint.

I also pay the $5 roaming fee to Sprint each month---I suspect we all should ask for a refund of that until the problem is fixed---we might get more attention????

Anyone heard more about the "Flash Fix" from Sprint?

I spent another hour on the phone with Sprint support again and hopefully the tech person is going to log the problem. He promised me that a dedicated treo rep was going to look into this problem.

As for the "flash fix": No update is to be expected any time soon. Maybe next month or the month after next according to the CS rep...

So is there any resolution to this issue ... I called Sprint tonight, of course they never heard of the problem, and want me to take my 650 to a store for testing. That will waste 3 hours of my day.

    Any solutions?

You know I'm really gonna be angry if my phone does this when I go on my next trip. They'd better fix it and fix it fast. Are you listening, Sprint? There is no excuse for it. Furthermore, there is no excuse for CS reps to still be ignorant about the issue when it is obvious that it is a widespread problem. I almost wish I hadn't signed up with Sprint. But, I WANTED THIS PHONE!

Followup this morning. I called Sprint PCS and asked directly to talk to a Tier 2 Treo Specialist ... luckily, I got no arguments from Tier 1. I explained the problem and the women very politely told me they were very aware of it, that it IS in their problem database as the "Treo650 Roaming Issue", and they had 37 complaints so far, mine is number 38. She said as of January 13th they had not heard anything from PalmOne about it.

I asked her if it was worth me replacing my unit, and she said "You could, but it probably won't solve anything."

I told her that I'm sure there are more then 38 units having the problem based on the threads here on TreoCentral.

She had no suggestion to fix the problem, since she said Sprint is awaiting a fix from PalmOne.

I thanked her for being straight with me, and appreciated knowing that they were aware of the problem and had reported it to PalmOne versus claiming there is nothing wrong.

So I guess that is where it stands. She told me she was pushing it up one more level and suggested calling back in about 2 weeks to see where it stands.

Just thought I'd chime in and say I also have this problem while roaming in the Pocono Mts in PA. I could not get a call out at all, even trying the enable/disable trick.

I guess even after reading this thread, nothing bothers you more than actually experiencing it.

My Treo: Treo 650, Sprint CDMA. SW: 1.08, HW: A.
My Plan: $105/mo for 2000 AT, Unlimited N&W starting at 7pm, Unlimited PCS to PCS, No Roaming Charges in the U.S., Unlimited PCS Vision, Unlimited SMS & PictureMail.
My Stats: Using an average of 50MB of PCS Vision per month. 2,500+ photos in my PCS PictureMail account. Had a Treo 600 since 10/24/03, switched to a Treo 650 on 1/5/05.

I want to know if anybody has an explanation. I was in Peru, and my Sprint Tre0650 show it was roaming. I use SWB as my home phone service in San Antonio, Texas, which forwards calls to my cell phone when I am not at home. At one point I received a call to my cell while I was there in Peru. Anybody has an explanation of how that happened?
  19. #59
Here's a suggestion. Let's all try to contact tier two, reference the "Treo 650 Roaming Problem" that's supposed to be in their database, and log complaints. If you can, find out who your talking to, and what support center their working out of. I don't know if Sprint assigns problem numbers, but finding the number (if there is one) would be best of all. Then we can all be complaining in unison.

I saw this method work really well in the TivoCommunity forum. One enterprising member posted the contact number, who to talk to, problem number, and so on. This immediately burns through the "I never heard about your problem issue".

I'll give a try tomorrow. If your as annoyed as me, give a try too.
