Im new to Bluetooth, but have used all the other versions of the Treo

I was able to set-up the BT headset with no problem, but i believe my friend had a Nokia phone that also was BT compatiable and he was able to see other BT devices in a room, and send messages to them, I have my phone set to Discoverable, but how do i see other Discoverable devices.

    Is this possible?

    thanx

On Palm devices in general, you can discover other nearby Bluetooth devices by going into Prefs->Bluetooth, hit "Trusted Devices", then choose "Add Device". Make sure the "Show:" dropdown at the top of the screen is set to "Current Discovery", and it should actively look for discoverable Bluetooth devices that are in range. You can pick one and try to pair with it from this screen.

    all known
    trusted

maybe there just isnt a " Current dicsovery" around??

will this option come up, have you used your phone in this manner??

    Thanks For your help otherwize.

I would really like to know how to do this as well. I have a friend with a Zire 72 with Bluetooth, and I would like to know how I can send messages to him. I heard something about Bluetooth on the 650 being locked to just the headset and hotsync, please tell me that isn't true! And, in the case that it is true, please tell me that there is someone and someway that it can be hacked. For me, that would be one of the coolest features of the PDA if I could send messages to my friends with Bluetooth-enabled PDA's.

    Thanks,

"Nearby devices" is your discovery screen (whether searching for a headset or a PC for hotsync).
If there is a device that is discoverable, you should see it in the screen once you click on the"Find More" button.
Once configured, you will then see it in "all known" or "all known and trusted" (if it is trusted).

Now, as to whether you can connect to another phone, I have no idea.
It seems perhaps not, since another phone is neither a PC nor a headset (the only 650 options), but others may be able to tell you more. Perhaps you can connect as a PC??

thats the only reason for me getting a bluetooth phone. I just presumed that it woiuld be able to do this by defult but clearly its not. if some one could make an app that should just show discoverable devices how good would that be? with just simple ooptions such as send file etc. i think this is a great new idea for a new app

Since BT travels no farther than you can throw a rock, why not just throw a rock at the back of your friends head and talk to him directly?

I guess the only use would be in-classroom IM-ing or some such use, but most data plans allow SMS or IM so why not use that??

I would think the main benefit would be file transfer faster than IR.

I actually am a student so that actually would be my main use for Bluetooth. In-classroom IMing. And the reason that I cannot use SMS or IM is because my friends that have Bluetooth have it on a Zire 72, which does not have any way to get to the Internet.

That would be a great idea for a new app. I can imagine that there are a lot of people out there who would like to use one of the most obvious uses for a Bluetooth-enabled device. I would really, really like an app that would do that.

Sorry, I was quoting the options from my T3 - it sounds like they tweaked the UI a bit going from 5.2 to 5.4. As gladman posted, "Nearby devices" is the option you're looking for.
