    Giggle.

So, let's see...WHAT is PalmOne doing to make this right for the TREO 650 over and above mundane other stuff?

Ah, yes, promising a fix Real Soon Now!

    Whatta racket!

(thanks to a post on palminfocenter pointing this out)

    OK SV, that was mean.

Every Palm PDA from the $199 Tungsten E and up is getting one of these stupid $10 SD cards. Very generous of Palm to include the crippled $650 Treo 650 in the list of PDAs that qualify for the giveaway.

something people should bear in mind is the 'echo-chamber' phenomenon of a specialist board such as this. for every poster, there are easily 100 lurkers who never, ever speak up. those who post are already more vocal by definition. every post tends to be self-amplifying. particularly with bad news - good news is 'boring' news - those who are happy with their 650 are by and large not even here on the board, because they're off having too much fun playing with the 650! nobody pays attention to the wheel that isn't squeeking.

if there were some way to get the thousands of lurkers to speak up, i'd bet 9 out of 10 would say they're incredibly happy with the 650. just look at how the *overall* volume of posts and reads here plummetted a day after the first 2000 or so got into customers hands. there's a fraction of the activity now. if the *majority* of treo 650 owners were being affected by the memory problem, that volume would have kept up. but it didn't. what we have are a small minority of posters here who are very vocal, repeatedly. how many threads on the memory problem now, six? eight? almost the same cast of characters in each of them. now go look at the thread about 'i now have a 650 in hand!' and look at the poster names there. hey, look at all those posters in that thread who haven't made a single post in any of the 'palm's colossal memory blunder, treo 650 defective beyond repair, burn down the house!' threads.

draw your own conclusions. of course, the same small cast of characters will now attack me as a 'palm apologist'. just watch.

I can't believe there are apologists for this colossal design blunder by PalmOne. This is of course ridiculous. If you want a "free" upgrade, then return it and wait. Either you can deal with 32mb, or you can't. PalmOne is not offering you a free upgrade... so if you don't return it, the only person who loses is you. There is no sense sitting around and hoping for what will never happen.

Of course they will attack, after all isnt that their MO?

PS you make great points about the thread activity going down when the people started getting their 650's in their hands, if it was so bad you would see them all back posting.

While I agree that some people have whined and been incredibly negative when it comes to the 650 and the memory, I do think that we owe thanks to people who raised the issue, drew attention it, and ultimately put P1 in a position of having to address it. Personally I would have been happier with 64mb out of the gate. I can live with 32mb (and since I won't actually be migrating from a 600 it'll be easier for me.) Regardless, I think we all will benefit from a ROM update that allows the 650 to manage memory more effeciently.

A numbers of users had legimate issues with the memory on 650 and experienced real problems migrating their apps and data over from a 600. (True, probably even more users didn't have problems, but every customer experience is important.) In addition to some whining there was a lot of intelligent discussion of the memory issue and work arounds, and even some reasonable suggestions on ways P1 could address this with customers. Ultimately that discussion led to P1 taking swift action to address the problem in an effort and make things right with their customers.

So I say Hurray hurray to everyone who raised the issue, and hurray to P1 for responding.
Oh, so they have internet on computers now!

yes, i agree. my main problem is with the people who have gotten up on their hind legs and screamed about "The Problem" but who don't have a 650, and have not tried it to see if they'll actually be affected by The Problem. Since buyers have 14 days to evaluate the device, during which they can return it for a full refund, this caterwalling with no direct evidence of their own is....annoying.

Some of these complainers have admitted that they're just complaining for the sake of complaining - they don't own a 650, they don't plan on getting a 650.

it's grand sport to harangue palmone while not being a customer, nor intending to become a customer - then in particular silently slinking away without a word when proven WRONG.

generally speaking, those with backbone, and balls, admit their errors.

Does anyone know how we actually go about getting the 128MB SD card?

Also, what about us Vienna Channel people? I am actually hoping the firmware upgrade comes after Vienna ships so I get the memory card and the firmware upgrade because if Vienna takes forever (like I heard they might) then I will get the firmware upgrade and not get a free no hassle memory card.

If anyone has tried to retrieve the memory card, let me know how you did it and what proof you need when contacting palmOne since I only have my confirmation email from Vienna Channels.

    (2) I will GLADLY accept money for my posts here and elsewhere! NOT A PROBLEM! You show me ANY site that will pay me for posting as I have for years and years then I'M THEIRS!

For the RECORD, I bought/owned a T5 WHICH HAS THE SAME NVFS AS THE TREO 650 and ran into similiar memory issues discussed here. As much as you'd like to dismiss my criticisms, my comments are based on EXPERIENCE.

I have no axe to grind - I call it the way I see it - good or bad. I've owned a Palm III, V, m505, V, T1, and T3 (and T600 and T5 for about 2 days) so I'm far from a "Palm-Basher". I just wish you Palm-Apologists would pull your heads out of your asssses and stop making excuses for Palm and stop dismissing people's comments like we have some kind of agenda. I just want a GREAT product and Palm is not making them anymore. You apologists are so blinded by loyalty to Palm you are compelled to attack anyone who criticizes their BULLSHIIIT moves. This is not a religion - it's just technology.

And I love how anyone who DARES voice a criticism is a "paid basher". No one needs to bash the Palm companies - they are great at bashing themselves through countless and repeated self-inflicted gunshots by bad decisions by bad management.

by the same token, anyone who DARES voice praise is not a "palm apologist". got it? okay? can you understand that simple concept? or are you too frothed up about the issue to see that it cuts both ways?

    right on cue!

oh, something i forgot to add in my original post, darnit: psychology 101: even though i didn't mention anyone by name, those who are the worst offenders won't be able to help themselves - my comments will anger them so much, they'll self-identify.

Paul - I never attacked anyone/anyone's comments for praising the Treo 650. If you like it and it works for you God bless. However, I don't like it when me/my comments are attacked just because you don't agree with them.

You DEFINE the words "Palm Apologist" - and regardless of your tactic to forewarn in your previous post that people will accuse you of being one will not stop me from hanging that ugly banner on its rightful place on top of your head.

It was obvious who you were attacking so you didn't need to mention me by name.

You are a 40 year old CHILD and I'm tired of playing with you.

uh huh. so, the following isn't an attack? " I just wish you Palm-Apologists would pull your heads out of your asssses and stop making excuses for Palm and stop dismissing people's comments like we have some kind of agenda"

riiiiigggghhhht. no attack there at all.

    yeah, no attack there, either.

really? you're the ONLY person here who *****es about the treo 650 even though you don't own one? you give yourself too much credit.

You are a 40 year old CHILD and I'm tired of playing with you.
you're off by five years, but be that as it may, i do have the mentality of an eleven year old. the difference between you and me, of course, is that i realize that about myself; you clearly don't.

indeed, that's a potential problem on any public forum.

one of the reasons y'all have to look at my ugly mug, and know my full name and much more, is because - in my opinion - if i'm to have any personal credibility, i have to take personal responsibility and be fully accountable for what i post.

posting anonymously is fine for those who choose to do so - no value judgement there. but for *me*, i choose full disclosure.

You are SO right. the lack of feature standardization is really diappointing. I don't know how you release the T5 withouth voice recording. The T had it. The T2 had it. The T3 had it, but T5, nah. I'm sorry, but that's dumb. dumb. dumb
