I have this same problem also. All my incoming SMS text messages are going to short mail. Right now I have tested it by sending a text message from SPCS phonesand T-Mobile phones. Are my messages supposed to be going to short mail? I was thinking that they are supposed to be pop-up(windows). Do I need a 3rd party app for this? I tried seraching for this issue but haven't found any answers.

    TIA,
    Shanta

Under the Messaging app I am sending and receiving regular SMS just fine, not Shortmail. This is part of PCS Vision services according to my docs. Maybe you have to call the dreaded Sprint support line...

Yeah I did that but, they are clueless...They could me I can only do it with a 3rd party app, but I don't believe that, as others are working fine with SMS.

If you address the message to <Phone_Number>@messaging.sprintpcs.com it will be sent via SMS. I believe that Sprint will choose the "best" delivery option (ie - most reliable), especially if it comes from a different carrier or ISP.

Is that what people (both on SPCS and non-SPCS) have to do, in order for it to be a pop-up on my end?

Sounds like something might not be right with how your phone is provisioned...the T650 supports it, but it almost seems that they've got it set on their end to send it to you via shortmail. Did you upgrade to the T650 from a phone that didn't support the "true" SMS?

Forgive me but what is shortmail vs sms?

Shortmail was (for some, still is) Sprint's half-a$$ed attempt at SMS. Essentially, it was browser based -- you have to go onto the web to get and send messages. All that gets sent to the phone is a "You have shortmail" message. Back in the day when people paid by the minute (2G) or by the KB (early days of Vision), it wasn't hard to understand why Sprint liked it so much better than real SMS that was sent right to the phone. Anyway, they finally introduced "real" SMS last year. Shortmail is still around for the older phones, as only the newer ones support the true SMS.

Both the Treo 600 and 650 support true SMS, so there shouldn't be any shortmail involved. It would appear that Sprint's messaging system thinks Magubbi has a phone that only accepts shortmail. I could be wrong, but I think that this is a problem on Sprint's end, and not with your phone...they'll have to fix it. Good luck...you may need it!

Sure did, I upgraded from a Samsung A500 (yes, this is such a big upgrade)

I thought it might be something on there end and call SPCS's Vision Department directly twice and still no go, they are trying to tell me this phon does not support true SMS.

It sounds like they haven't flipped your account to use true SMS. It still is acting like you have the a500.

As for their claims that the phone doesn't support it...calmly, nicely tell them that they don't have a clue what they're talking about. I'm sure they've heard it before. : ) I'd ask to go straight to a Tier 2 specialist.

Seems to be working just fine here. Maybe its a location thing? I know there were issues like this when Sprint was initially rolling out the sms stuff earlier in the year and it depended on which city you were in.

I am in the SF Bay Area, and SMS is working fine out here. I guess I will call once again to the SPCS Vision/3G department and ask to speak with a Tier 2 person. Both phones on my account have this issue, as both came form a A500 to a Treo 650. I hate calling SPCS.

I bet the monkeys at support type something in their computer that tells them if it's compatible and the system hasn't been updated yet. If you go to www.sprintpcs.com you can log into online account access. There is a section for messaging, where you can select how to receive messages, either sms or short messaging as described in posts above, or "let Sprint decide." I *think* I have mine set to let Sprint decide, but not sure. But you should be able to set it to sms. I would supply a direct link for you (and make sure the feature is still there, been a long time since I looked), but when I tried to log in just now the system came back saying online services are unavailable at this time.

Yeah, I did that this morning, and still no go. I really hope, I can get this fixed, as I hate short mail!

If they can't help you, you can at least get a good recipe for Tandoori Chicken.
