    Newb alert!

I'm still using Versamail, not Snapper, on my Treo650. (And no longer getting crashes!) I do have Zlauncher and have moved stuff to my 1GB SD. Very sweet.

I was wondering how one moves the databases from Versamail (app in ROM) to the SD with Zlauncher. I don't think "copy to card" would work. If I move the databases directly from FileManager, how does a newb figure out which files are associated with Versamail... or any app for that matter?

Same thing applies to the Camera (app in ROM) app. How can i get the default photo storage location to be the SD?
    Man, this Treo650 rocks.

    Silverado,

Many, many thanks and kudos to you for a very useful post. After salivating over the 650 for the last 7 months, I was initially disappointed to read all the doom and gloom about NVFS. Having packed my 600 to the gills with apps and data, I didn't want to give any of those up on account of PalmOne's shortsightedness. When I saw your post, I regained hope and bought one. I too am now a very happy Treo650 user and thought I'd add something here to help others.

For point of reference, here is my Treo650 setup with 3.0M free for web cache, temp app use, etc. This is nearly identical with my Treo600 setup which left 4.3M free:

    Apps fully in memory
    AAFlights (American Airlines flight schedule)
    AT&T (country code lookup)
    BackupBuddy
    Butler
    CardSpeed
    Converter
    DatavizTech
    DirAssist
    Drills
    ExpenseLogPro
GoodLink (wireless, secure Outlook email, contacts, calendar, memos, ToDos) - ~5M alone
    Metronome
    mSafe
    myBible
    PalmInternals
    PalmPrices
    PasswordsPlus
    SoundRec
    StarAlliance (Lufthansa flight schedules)
    TrackerDog
    TreoGuard
    VFSMark
    Vindigo
    WorldMate
    zLauncher

    On SD card
    AcidImageBasic
    Backgammon
    BeTheDealer
    BigClock
    CardExport
    Checkers
    DailyReader
    DocumentsToGo
    GolfTrac
    Memorize!
    mmPlayer
    MobiPocket
    PayoffPlus
    PDANet
    OmniRemote
    Retro (Atari games)
    Sea War
    Sketcher
    SunCompass
    TacTic
    TicTacMax
    Troopers
    Wheel
    Zap!2016

    A few migration notes:
    - As you said, look for ways to move app data to the SD card. For example, use DocumentsToGo to store all data on the SD card, MobiPocket gives you an option to store the news feeds there, store SoundRec recordings on SD, move Camera pictures,
movies, any other JPEGs to the SD card as well. With the higher processor speed in the 650, the read-from-SD lag is less than on the 600 and not annoying at all. I would even say upgrade or replace apps that don't handle data storage on the SD well (I replaced FireViewer with AcidImageBasic for that reason).

    - Special note on using zLauncher to move apps to the SD card. In some cases, apps may have unique support libs which don't have the same creator ID as the app. In these cases (e.g. MobiPocket), zLauncher doesn't know all the files that can be moved (I assume because of the different creator IDs). I manually moved the remaining ones to the /PALM/PROGRAMS/zLauncher/apps/<app dir>. That way, zLauncher will move them all to/from memory since it just goes by what files are in that dir.

    - Watch the size of your PhoneCallDB file. If, like mine, it hasn't been purged in awhile, it can silently grow (esp with NVFS) and take up valuable memory. In my case, this was a significant savings.

    - Apps which hotsync with the PC/Mac typically can't be moved to the SD card since the data must be in memory to get updated. In my case, examples include AAFlights, Vindigo and WorldMate. With AAFlights, it seems I don't have an option other than to scrap the program and use the web interface instead. With Vindigo and WorldMate, you can update their database via wireless connection, so one could put those completely on the SD card, turn off the hotsync conduit, and just update them that way. I could add another 1.6M of free memory doing this, but haven't needed to yet.

Apologies to mobile readers for the long post, but hopefully it was worth the read and will help others in their migration.

    Tom

Tom- can PhoneCallDB be purged simply by deleting the file? Will the Treo then recreate it?
  4. #184
I'm pretty sure it can as I believe I've done that before. The other option is to use Options->Purge in the Call Log app which allows you to select how many recent ones to keep.

Just read a post at MTDN about this issue - see http://mytreo.net/forum/index.php?topic=4458.0

I need some help with mastering ZLauncher as far as how to identify and transfer both to the 1 GIG HD Card and back to the Treo 650 RAM. I've got the ZLauncher set up feel I need some real time coaching before I screw up something by missing some the files that need to be moved and trying to fire up an application from the HD card and having the 650 crash. Silverado if you have AOL put NextLevelMentor in your Buddy List and IM me when you see me on please.

    Thanks in advance

are you using a high end (faster performance) SD card or just the run of the mill bargain card? Just curious how much difference the fastest card makes on this device.

    Hey Tom,

On DocsToGo, was there an option to install on the card instead of memory, or did you move it manually? I moved the four main files manually and got back some memory, but there were some files (like dbgraphconverter.prc) that did not like being moved manually. I am hoping that if there is an install option to the card I will be able to get even more of DocsToGo on the card instead of memory.

Mark Bergman - I'm using a PQI 1GB card. Not sure if you consider that a run-of-the-mill card or not, but price-wise it's either competitive or just slightly on the high side of median. I chose it since it scored well at http://heller.ca/cgi-local/palm/cardspeed.cgi#stats and then waited for a good sale at Fry's. Ended up getting it for $80 after rebate. I think regular price is about $80 now.

ZBoater - I have all of my documents set to install to the card. For the apps, the best way to move them to the SD card is with the DataViz utility at http://download.dataviz.com/support/...ataviztech.prc

For about $35 more you can get the Sandisk Extreme III 1GB at adorama.com. Its 20mb/sec (60X). Fastest I have even seen!

For me, the question is "will I notice the difference?". I've run with basic Lexar and now PQI cards and have never had a problem with an app or really noticed much of a performance problem. Granted, with the 650 the processor is faster so that must help some, but as long as my music and videos play off the card, it's good to me.

For the extra $35, I think I'd spend it on the Cardo Scala-500 BT headset because the one I got for free with the phone is junk

Awesome man! Thanks a lot!!! Worked like a champ, and I got an extra 3MB of main memory back, which is like GOLD!!!

As for the card, I noticed the DocsToGo apps taking a little big longer to open. I also take pics/videos directly to the card, and that is very slow going. I am hoping the new card will improve significantly. As soon as I get it will post impressions.
  15. #195
I don't take too much video with the 650, so hadn't noticed a slowdown writing to the card. I guess with stills, it just doesn't take long enough for me to notice. Would like to hear your impressions when you get a chance. I was just thinking about buying another card so I could carry more movies with me.

Ah, but is anyone using NoviiRemote with the Treo 650?

    http://www.novii.tv/

Works great on the T3, which may say, "bye-bye" with a Treo to replace it...

Based on quite a few posts here, the IR transmitter on the Treo (600 and 650) just isn't strong enough to make it a useful remote. It seems you need to be within a few feet of the receiver for it to work.

Of course, if we all had to get up and walk accross the room to change channels, it would double the amount of exercise some of us get.

I'm out of my mind. But feel free to leave a message.
  18. #198
That is correct - the 600/650 IR seems to be built only for beaming between devices on the desktop. I keep my old trusty Visor as my universal remote because of the remote and hiher res (than 600) screen

Treo 650 owners (Cingular or AT&T GSM— surely, doesn't matter), can you please install and test:

http://www.novii.tv/ -- What's your effective range for the IR?
http://www.mobi-systems.com/ -- Any issues, slowdowns; problems reading the card?

    Thanks!
