I sent Ed Colligan an email voicing the displeasure of many of the people on these boards who seek a bit of clarity as to when the 650 will be released. Here is his response in its entirety:

    Subject: RE: Treo 650 Release

    Mr. XXXXXXX,

I appreciate the enthusiasm from our customers for the product, and I am sorry if you feel in any way that we have mis-represented our delivery timeframe. When we originally announced the Treo 650, we quoted a delivery date "later this year in the United States, with worldwide rollout to begin in 2005 ." That is all we have said. Any other expectation was developed by others. We did open our web-site for pre-orders on November 8th, but it clearly stated when that happened that "expected shipments would be in two to three weeks." By my calculations that would be no earlier than the 22nd of November and no later than the 29th. Today is November 16th.

One of the things that may not be well understood, and is difficult to explain and understand is that phone based products are different than PDA's or other non-wireless devices in that we do not totally control the timing of shipment and delivery. Our carrier partners are the ones that control the launch dates. They decide when to ship into their channels, and they decide whether the product is ready for shipment to customers because of certain regulatory and certification requirements for their networks. Certainly we have influence over this timing, but we are not in total control of it, and that is why we can not give a definitive date. We are trying to provide as close an approximation as possible, without being misleading, or giving you information that you might later claim to have been inaccurate. Please be assured that any pre-orders that have been taken are not charged to the credit card until shipment is made. Also, when shipment is made, all units do not go out instantly, and not everyone asks for overnight shipment, so some time may still exist between shipment and delivery.

As you can see from the dates above, we are expecting to begin shipments shortly. I do hope you enjoy your product when you get it, and we do appreciate your patience.

    Sincerely,

    Ed

I'd like to see the original email sent back - including full headers.

The following is the text of the email that I sent to both Ed Colligan (President) and Todd Bradley (CEO) of PalmOne. I'm not sure why anyone wants to see the headers but in case you are wondering, I got their email addresses by searching on the web for other palmone email addresses and used the same format.

    Gentlemen:

I am writing you this email out of frustration that I cannot reach anyone at Palmone to give me an answer to what should otherwise be a straightforward question. I have tried emailing Palmone customer service only to receive an automatic reply back that didn't answer my question.

Simply put, on what day will the Treo 650 be released for shipment? There is considerable consternation out there in your customer base regarding when this will be released. There was a supposed Palmone representative online who specifically stated that the units would ship 11/12. Now Sprint says one thing, Palmone says another, and Vienna Channels something else. Even when there is a statement about shipping it's extremely vague - saying "1-3 weeks" or "4th Quarter" is not an exact shipping date.

I'm not one of these people who has to have the first unit off the assembly line. I would just like to have a date certain so I know I am not waiting in vain for something that might now be released for several months, thus delaying a decision I need to make immediatley in terms of purchasing 10 phones for my salespeople.

I have been a "loyal" Palmone/Handspring customer (owner of Visor, Edge, Treo 270, Tero 300, Treo 600) for more years than I care to count. I think you make excellent products and There are many out there who feel the same way. The way this product has been introduced leaves a lot to be desired and tarnishes what is otherwise an excellent company.

Obviously I want this product released otherwise I wouldn't frequent this board daily. But I can't understand why people act as if they have been personally insulted and put out because the 650 hasn't hit the streets yet even though it was never promised to be delivered yet.

All these claims of P1 ineptness and misleading customers have been drummed up by customers starting their own rumors based on rumors and innuendo. C'mon e-mailing the president of the company claiming that they are not being forthcoming? Really? It can't be that serious can it?

Interestingly, I said the same thing here without being palmOne's president. My point is that what he said is obvious (or should be). I could never understand what this whole firestorm is about.

A very thoughtful, straightforward response from PalmOne.

Nah... don't think he can. Even with the full headers, he would most likely tell you how that could be forged, or how email (and even IP addresses) could be spoofed. Nevermind the fact that this message said absolutely nothing new.

For spam purposes alone, I would never post full headers in an open forum. It is completely unreasonable to expect someone to include them.

Ahem...on an on-line message board where all posters are pretty much anonymous, I think the answer to that question is:

== "Why yes! I can accept some things for what they are worth!"

For all others I expect to see confirmation of some sort that what I'm reading has even a modicum of validity.

[note - the multitude of "Me, too!" posts are sufficent confirmation for me - YMMV - but none of those was around at the time of my original post in this thread]

For general discussion, opinions, facts, not facts, etc. I can appreciate your scepticism -- and longing for PROOF.

However, for a clear response to an email - which seemed perfectly logical to start with - it would be nice if you could give someone the benefit of the doubt.

Let's face it, if the original poster went to that trouble to 'create' such an elaborate web of deceit, well he's got more problems than you and I combined.

98% of the people here are for the benefit of the whole... to GAIN knowledge, not spew lies and create false statements. Why do you insist on portraying everyone as the latter?

Perhaps it is coincidence, or maybe not, but I just received an email from Palm directly stating they were expecting a ship date of 11/22. I wonder if this new honest information (not that it will be totally accurate, but it is directly from Palm) is a result of the complaints directly to the top of PalmOne? In any case, I feel better, not that I have reason to, but knowing something helps some.

Got the same email, looks like shipping will start the WEEK OF 11/22!

Not 11/22 exactly.... but the week of. Good enough for me!!!!

There are SO many pure liers on message boards in general and CERTAINLY on TreoCentral that this benefit of the doubt is totally unwarranted. How many posts have you read that say:

== "I talked to my inside contact and he said..."!?

The best "proof" for any post is to provide a link to a source of information outside one's control. Simply posting:

== "I got an email from the head of PalmOne and he said..."

won't hack it for me - ever.

[and, note again - the multitude of Me-Too posts are exactly the "links to sources of information outside the original poster's control" that DO hack it for me - YMMV]

I can accept your opinion... I'm just not nearly that cynical.

I would rather prove or dis-prove someone myself, before calling them out in an open forum. If they are wrong, and I can prove it, then sure -- OPEN SEASON.
