I think I saw an older post on this but owning PLMO stock, they announced that they will hit their number this quarter (backed guidance). They did the smart thing and took preorders. They only recoginze revenue when they ship so if they need the revenue this qtr., they will have to ship by Nov. 30. If not, then a Dec. shipment is not out of the question. I believe they will decide when it ships not Sprint.

I'm glad someone is thinking clearly. This is a much better explanation of the shipping schedule than the "evil Sprint empire" theory.

It's up to Sprint and when they feel it works well on their network. Sprint has 1 month of exclusivity. So it suits them to wait until the end of November beacause that forces T-Mobile and Cingular to have to wait until after Christmas to launch.

Everyone thinks PalmOne has no power at all in this. They think Sprint has the ultimate say because without demand from Sprint, PalmOne has no phones to sell. Nobody has stopped to think that without PalmOne and the 650, Sprint won't have all those extended contracts for upgrades and a new, pretty tool to sign up all those customers that can't wait for the GSM version.

PalmOne has just as much say in this as everyone else.

I'm not sure if i remember correctly from my accounting class, but isn't there a provision in gaap that allows a company to record unearned revenue in current ledgers? As in, a preorder can count as revenue today, even if nothing has actually been shipped or paid for?

Unless you ship something you CANNOT recognize revenue.

True, but if you ship and still have a future obligation it will complicate taking it to revenue. Any customer buying a Treo can reasonably be expected to use it on a carrier's network- hence the power of the carrier to say when it becomes shippable product. We don't know what contractual obligations Palm1 may have to Sprint except the oft mentioned exclusivity.
They statement here that that is for a period of 30 days is news to me.

BTW - Sprint rep working the booth area at Best Buy this pm said they were shipping on 17th- and that Palm1 called that. He's a 650 fan who was waiting to get his own unit.

You're probably correct in your analysis. I did a search on froogle.com and the four retailers that carry the 650 list 12/01/2004 as their earliest ship date:
